LASHES WITH WATER
The vision of a man or woman
is blurred underwater
The body underwater moves
as if held and pushed along
by invisible beings
Hearing is changed
Scent impossible
And touch turns
to a mix of clouds
and silk
I met her underwater
Her hair was made of
thick corded, elven wood
Her skin was burnished bronze
Green eyes flecked
with meteors
And curves were graceful swans
cresting in formation the ripples
of the pool
I gasped so that
water filled my lungs
Her body glittered
with strange gold
found only on the moon
Moss grew upon the glass sides
of tall buildings
And any apologies within the range
of her hearing turned to stone birds
then flew away
Ferocious colors searched her body,
rooting snouts and paws...
until precious curve or crevice
was found: in it crept a wild pink
or husk flushed red
I only smiled
although she was weeping
The wall upon which
she leaned sighed and
turned to purple
Her shoulders heaved
up and down slowly,
imperceptibly, the molecules
of the wall binding and unbinding
She looked about as if to say
this world can't still be surviving
But just as quick
she grew gallant
Smiled and nodded
performing niceties
Meeting each gaze
of those who stopped
to talk to her
I coughed, shook water
from my hair and approached
her long and from an angle
What is it that keeps us
from drowning? I asked
her with my eyes. For she,
too, was underwater.
And I know not how,
she smiled.
Her lashes were wet
and beautiful as jewels
catching light
They touched her skin
and made it damp
Cooling some
of the pain
I felt sad and thunderstruck
recognizing constellations
and circumstance
Everywhere upon her body
music glistened, eager
to take flight
Nearby, birds cried
I smoked a cigarette with her
I asked her her name
Anything to stay near her
The lights in the city are
not as easy or as gentle
as the water
Her words were
Walk with me
I did
I saw the sun
