GREENS MEDIA RELEASE ON REPORT AND DISALLOWANCE MOTION

Report shows Kurd ban wrong: Greens
A report by the Parliament's Intelligence Committee reinforces the
Greens view that the government's ban on the Kurdish Worker Party
(PKK)should be disallowed by the Senate, Greens leader Bob Brown said
today.
The Committee's majority report, while outlining the community concerns
about the ban, recommended the government look at only banning the
military wing of the PKK. A minority report by two Labor senators called
on the government to reassess the ban.
"The report confirms that there is no threat to Australia from the PKK,
but the ban is a big problem for Kurdish Australians who support
independence," Senator Brown said today.
"Since the laws banning the financing of this group were enacted in
2002, no one has been prosecuted."
"It is clear this is all about currying favour with the Turkish
government rather than fighting terrorism."
"Parliament needs to debate this ban on Kurdish Australians' freedom to
express their support for independence," Senator Brown said.
The Greens will give notice of a motion to disallow the ban when the
Senate resumes in May.
