The Loyd Family Players will be busting up the Independent (628
Divisadero, San Francisco) on Friday the 13th; read on for more info
about the acts we're performing with; or skip to the end for the gig
breakdown, and some hot links.
It's a big ol'smorgasbord of music, starting some time shortly after 8
pm with <B>DJ BEAT RED</B> (formerly A-Rock) of KALX and Kitty's,
playing some seriously hip shit, soul and Latin and synth-pop and
whatever-the-hell-have-you. Then it's either us (and you know what
that's like) or <b>MAGIC BULLETS</b>, an SF six-piece that's been
getting lots of nice press for playing some pretty classic indie guitar
pop--it reminds me of a sort of Loyd Cole-meets-the Wedding Present
sound. Melody, emotion, expressive bass--the kind of thought-rock you
can definitely shake your head and shoulders to.
After the Bullets and the Loyds, there's <b>THE HEAVENLY STATES</b>, an
Oakland quartet who may be best known around these parts for Rob
Harvilla's <i>East Bay Express</i> cover story some years ago, wherein
the music writer hitched a ride with the band when they tried to play
some shows in Libya. The States have a wiry (but not Wire-y) 60s
straight-ahead pop rock sound, outlined with gruff, sexy male vocals
entwined with pretty female ones, and layered with interesting elements
ranging from violin to synths to monsters-of-garage-rock keyboards, so
you can get those hips moving some more--and maybe even get your feet
into the act.
And finally, this whole megillah's a CD release shindig for Oakland
somewhat silly party rockers <b>CHOW NASTY</b>, whose song "Ungawa" was
pretty ubiquitous on KALX for a while last year. Chances are, some or
all of the Loyds will be taking the stage with these guys for part of
their set, so stick around, especially if you've never seen one of our
collaborations.
We hope you'll come out ... we're pretty new to this whole club thing
(having played mostly festivals, parties, and warehouse extravaganzas in
the past) and would love to see a sea of smilin' friendly faces when we
march through the crowd! (Or quite possibly, in the case of the author
of this email, hobble through the crowd on a busted ankle.) We may even
have some new merch, and we'll DEFINITELY have some tall tales of High
Sierra and much more.
