Folic Acid Supplementation Urged

In my search of important vitamins for this series I have
referred to my own studies, read many reports, like the short
summary directly below and asked several question of
nutritional health professionals and one vitamin that was
continually mentioned is FOLIC ACID. Hence my choice for
this issue's Health News Column.

"BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA. It is becoming increasingly clear that
fruits, vegetables, fiber, and antioxidant vitamins are potent
protectors against many forms of cancer. Now folic acid has been
added to the list. A recent study shows that increased dietary
intake of folic acid significantly reduces the risk of developing
adenomas (tumors) of the colon and rectum. Dr. Gladys Block of
the University of California points out that only 9% of all
Americans consume the recommended five or more servings a
day of fruits and vegetables. She recommends that serious
consideration be given to fortifying food and/or urging people
to use antioxidant supplements so as to reduce the incidence of
cancer."
Block, Gladys Micronutrients and cancer: time for action?
Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Vol. 85, No. 11,
June 2, 1993, pp. 846-47

Our cells, where our DNA is formed depend on flawless,
continuous replication. DNA can be seriously damaged through
attacks by free radicals making an adequate antioxidant status
essential to our cell health. Research states that B vitamin-Folic
Acid is equal or perhaps even more important in ensuring correct
DNA replication. Hence folic acid deficiencies have been found in
a large variety of disorders.

To List A Few:

Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke,
osteoporosis, cervical and colon cancer, depression, dementia,
cleft lip and palate, hearing loss, and of course, neural tube
defects. The list of conditions involving a folic acid deficiency
is growing day-by-day, but as shown in clinical evidence, most of
these conditions can be reversed by supplementation.

Folic acid (folinic acid, folacin, pteroylglutamic acid) was first
isolated from spinach leaves (its name derives from the Latin
folium meaning "leaf") in 1964 and early on was found to be
essential in the prevention of anemia in animals. Later it was
discovered that ensuring that mothers had adequate folic acid
levels could prevent neural tube defects in human babies.

Folic acid is essential for the synthesis of adenine and thymine,
two of the four nucleic acids that make up our genes, DNA and
chromosomes. It is now also clear that folic acid is required for
the proper metabolism of the essential amino acid methionine
that is found primarily in animal proteins. Methionine is converted
to homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine, in turn, may be
converted back to methionine in a process requiring folic acid
(tetrahydrofolate) and vitamin B12 (cobalamin) as a catalyst or it
may be metabolized into cysteine in a process catalyzed by
vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Cysteine is a vital link in the synthesis of
glutathione, one of our most important antioxidants. A high blood
level of homocysteine has been found to be highly detrimental to
health and is invariably accompanied by a low level of folic acid.

Numerous studies have confirmed that high homocysteine levels
not only increase the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but
also increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral
vascular disease.

A must Read!

How Healthy Is Your Liver?

Milk Thistle is one of the most effective herbs for
detoxifying and regenerating the liver. The liver is
responsible for breaking down and eliminating most
toxic substances. These include drugs, preservatives
in food, artificial flavoring and coloring agents,
environmental chemicals, chemicals found in tap water,
household cleansers, air pollution and tobacco smoke.
Many prescription and OTC (over the counter) drugs
used today have been shown to cause liver toxicity.
Toxic additives in our food and environment put us at
risk for liver toxicity. Hundreds of scientific
studies have demonstrated that Milk Thistle can
protect the liver from potent toxins that can lead
to diseases of the liver.

Some Advantages Of Milk Thistle:

1) It stimulates protein synthesis, which contributes
to re-generation and replacement of liver cells.

2) It helps protect the liver against poisoning by
blocking the absorption of toxins into liver cells.

3) It inhibits the formation of inflammatory substances
that contribute to liver degeneration.

4) It helps the liver break down toxins.

5) Milk Thistle is a potent anti-oxidant (more potent
than Vitamins C and E). This means it can counteract
free radical damage that can cause degenerative diseases
including cancer.

6) It increases intracellular levels of glutathione, a
substance necessary for detoxicating reactions. Milk
Thistle has a long history of use and no significant
toxicity has been seen.

Trials in more than 2,000 patients showed benefits in
alcohol and chemical induced fatty liver, cirrhosis,
chronic hepatitis, bile duct inflammation and non
specific changes in liver tissue. Elevated liver
enzymes (blood tests for liver function) also improve
with Milk Thistle therapy. Silymarin may also help
prevent or treat gallstones by increasing the solubility
of the bile. The best-known active compound in Milk
Thistle is silybin. It is important to remember that
there are many other naturally occurring ingredients
that are vital for optimum activity. Therefore, use
the whole herb or a high quality extract.

When shopping for milk thistle look for a standardized
(70 or 80% silybin) product. A typical adult dose is
100 - 150 mg. of silybin, which is approximately 200 mg.
dry herb three times daily, or the equivalent in a liquid.

Medicinal herbs should not be used continuously for
extended periods, 5 days on then 2 days off for 6 weeks.
Skip 1 week and begin again. It could be used one week
each month as a little extra protection in an otherwise
healthy person. Of course consult you Herbal Health Care
Professional before taking Milk Thistle or any other
medicinal herb.

A Message From Laura LeWars
Master Herbalist in PA,USA

Everyone has heard something about detoxing the inside
of their body sometime in their lives. We all know it
makes sense and is good for us. Some of us take the
time to research a holistic professional they trust
and some of us just go by what we hear on an info-
mercial. Then again some of us can't be bothered.

I hate people who give boring lectures on what you
should do but this relates to an issue very near and
dear to me. Environmental allergies caused by toxic
chemicals. Just this last year I have found out so
much disturbing information about what chemical
companies are doing to us inside and out.

I have made it a point to research the most healthy
products to use in the home and on the body. This
company has products that are no less than a Miracle
while providing a cost effective way to rid your
personal environment of harmful chemicals once and
for all. You have to bathe anyway, why not just make
it healthy and be detoxing the chemicals that your
body is in contact and absorbing all day long. If
your going to take the steps to good health and
alkalizing your body, why not try something so simple.
I have switched over all the bath soap, moisturizers,
deodorant, and laundry detergent in the house to these
products.

This is not a note to sell anyone, It is just something
that I feel, is simple, affordable, and necessary to
add to finding balance in the body. I am amazed how
many people don't think twice about the soaps, shampoos,
conditioners and detergents they use every day
and these are just the chemicals that come into the
most personal contact with our bodies daily.

This is not a nutritional supplement company they
only have the soaps, and moisturizers, and deodorant.
They have been in business for 20+ years. The soaps
are awesome, and that’s it.

If you get the time, take a look at it, I have provided
a link to my webpage about these products.

Be sure to let me know what you think or contact me
with any questions you might have. I wish you the best
of health, especially in the scare of bio-terrorism in
the US.

It's Not True, Salt Is Good For You

When one thinks of salt, one thinks of the salt found in one's
supermarket. However, the truth is that is not real salt.

Hainsport, NJ, August 15, 2002 -- Most people in our day and age
think that salt is bad for your health. However, in truth, salt is
very healthy. Without the proper amount of salt in your body, muscles
won’t contract, blood won’t circulate, food won’t digest, and the
heart won’t beat. Without sufficient sodium, a person’s senses
would be dulled and their nerves would not function. Current
scientific research reveals that there are actually very few salt-
related health problems. A healthy, active lifestyle demands a
sufficient salt intake. "The contention that our body can function
on no salt at all or on a restricted ration of salt causes more
problems than it solves," says Dr. Alan Storgest M.D.

Since salt is necessary for good health. Why is it viewed as some-
thing unhealthy and kept to a minimum in a "healthy" diet? The
reason is that when most people think of salt, they think of the salt
found in the local supermarket. This salt however has gone through
such heavy processing to be turned into a white, pure, free-flowing
substance, it losses all attributes of what salt actually is. "After
the processing this salt contains only a resemblance of what true
salt and a processed salt have in common. They taste very similar
but a true whole salt has a delicate and richer flavor, " says
Sholom Yaffa, co-founder of CelticSalt.com.

But isn't salt bad for your blood pressure? "Not true at all, " says
Sholom Yaffa. "When discussing health benefits and ill effects of
salt, it is important to realize that enough studies of different salts
and their effects have not been conducted. An understanding of
how whole salt works in the body leads us to believe that it will not
cause high blood pressure. In fact, many of our customers using
our whole salt product, (Celtic Sea Salt® - a special sea salt
imported from the sea coast of France.) report that their high blood
pressure goes down after they add this whole, unprocessed salt to
their diet."

A study performed in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with 100 men and
women between the ages of 55 and 75 with mild to moderate hyper
tension showed that when common table salt (98%NaCl) was re-
placed with whole mineral salt naturally high in magnesium and
potassium, a reduction in blood pressure equivalent to that
obtained with blood pressure reducing drugs was achieved.

So, how is it possible to tell the difference between a processed
salt and a true whole salt? "It is very hard, " says Sholom Yaffa.
"Even a lot of special salts and sea salts which are found in the
health food store are basically no different than the regular
processed salt. All true whole salts though, have some common
attributes. One; they are all light grey in color. Two; the salt
is moist to the touch, and retains its moisture even after it is
in cool storage for a long period of time. Three; all true whole
salts are formed of very small, precise cubic crystals visible to
your eyes. Without all three of those attributes, it is very likely
that you are dealing with a salt which has gone through either a lot
of heavy processing, or its minerals were removed, or most probably,
both."

"Make sure that the salt you choose to use has all three of the
above attributes," says Sholom Yaffa. " These three attributes are
essential for a salt to be a whole salt. "

For more information about specifically about Celtic Sea Salt and
whole salt in general, visit the web site www.CelticSalt.com.

Phoebe's Pet Column:

Greetings Human Friends,

So, I over heard them talking the other day,
Margaret and her friend Suzi. Rufus, my best friend,
is a cute little guy. He is part Chihuahua and Chinese
Powder Puff. He is a member of Suzi's household and
he visits often. Well, Rufus and I were stretched
out on the living room rug, pretending to sleep when
I heard Margaret saying she plans to put me on a
BARF diet!

I immediately popped up and bolted through my doggie
door to get some air...woooof...."Now what is she
up to?", I said to Rufus who was now standing at my
side. Rufus told me to calm down, "Hey" he said,
"Can't be that bad, she treats you well and looks
out for your best interests." Well, I hope Rufus is
right, must be something good and of course good
for me, knowing Margaret and her healthy stuff.

Late that night I hit the computer and did some
research. I found the info I placed at the end of
this note.

Seems this BARF (bones and raw food) is good stuff
for dogs and cats too. It's the type of food we were
naturally meant to have...you know, before those cans
of cooked mystery meat and those bags of dry little
bricks called kibble came along. So maybe having fresh
or frozen raw foods specially made for canines and
felines is a good idea. Come back next month and I'll
fill you in on how it's going. Check out below and see
what I'll gradually be weaning to……till next time,
BARF's the word!

Readers Feedback
_________________________

Dear Subscribers,

I have a request for some feedback in the from of
new subscribers. It's been a rough few weeks for me
and my computer. The hard drive died on my 2 1/2 yr
old Dell. Although I back up most everything, my
personal list (not added to Topica) of subscribers was
lost. These people for whatever reason didn't register
for Topica list service so I sent them a copy of
The Path News from my personal email client.
Unfortunately that email list is now history.

Advertising is costly and I work for free so I am
asking you my subscribers for help to build my
subscription base back up again.

If you know anyone you feel would benefit from
my newsletter please send them to http://thepathnews.com
and have them click on #9 subscribe information.
It will be greatly appreciated and hopefully beneficial
and informative to your friends and/or loved ones.

Thanks,
Margaret
