Are You A Receptacle For The Colds and Flu Season?
© By Lena Sanchez
October 31st is fast approaching and the beginning of the
colds and flu season!
Why?
Because the sugary treats start to flow and continue flowing
until well after New Years day in the U.S.. Those great
tasting treats are the trigger that shoots you and your child
in the immune system and says, "Okay cold/flu I'm here
waiting to be bombarded and weak."
Within 48 hours of Halloween treats the doctor's phone
starts to ring off the hook and continues through February
or March with people headed in thinking the doctor can
make them well. Sorry, but that is a fallacy! Colds
and flu do not require anything a doctor has for you. In fact
when he/she writes that prescription you are set to have a
cold or flu longer than you would have!
Yes, the TV ads you see tell you different but consider
the source - Pharmaceutical company trying to sell
you on a prescription or OTC drug.
My favorite doctor use to tell patients, who wanted a
prescription for their cold or flu, "With a prescription
your cold will last 14 days, without a prescription it
will last 2 weeks!" Trying to get them to understand
a prescription would not help them! He did fail in one
area and that was the other effects from that prescription.
A seldom-told truth about the long-term effects of all the
chemicals we take in prescription drugs, bathing, showering,
foods we eat and topical preparations put on in the form
or lotions, shampoos, etc. Those things put our hormonal
and immune systems into a tail spin setting us up for all
kinds of unwanted maladies. But that isn't the only
negative impact of those drugs.
Some commonly prescribed drugs cause severe nutritional
deficiencies all by themselves killing the immune system…
nearly every manmade drug takes a heavy toll in unwanted,
and dangerous, side effects… Immune system death being
the most serious one! So combine sweet treats with drugs,
Voila! Instant calamity waiting to happen to you.
If you are using or subject any of the following you will be a
receptacle for the winter season colds and flu….
DIURETICS for high blood pressure wash potassium,
magnesium, sodium, zinc and vitamin B2 right out of your
body along with the water. Even more alarming was the
report From the National Cancer Institute in November
1998 stated that, "diuretics also increase the risk of
kidney cancer."
ESTROGEN replacement drugs, such as Premarin,
can leave you deficient in all the B complex, vitamin C,
magnesium and zinc.
ANTACIDS steal from your tissues important life
altering vitamins A and B1, folic acid, calcium, copper,
iron and phosphorus.
ANTIBIOTICS deplete numerous vitamins --B2, C, D,
niacin, folic acid, biotin…and minerals---calcium, iron,
magnesium, potassium and zinc.
SHAMPOOS and CONDITIONERS that are chemical
based have several chemicals but a couple that has
drawn attention lately is DEA and Sodium Laureth Sulfate,
or simply SLS which are absorbed into your blood stream
and make changes in our hormonal systems that in turn
cause cancer & other diseases.
CHLORINE in our municipal water systems has been
proven to cause cancers of all kinds, with bathing in
chlorinated water being worse than drinking chlorinated
water. Bottled water still has chlorine so don't feel that
you are safe just because you drink bottled water.
ANTI-INFLAMMITORIES (NSAIDS) stop the production
of good prostaglandins, which promote healing of the
joints and cartilage. Causing further damage to your
joints and muscles…
When taking most prescriptions you are undermining your
immune system and will take months sometimes years
depending on your diet and nutrients taken, to bring it back,
unless you take a probiotic, minerals and mega vitamins
along with it and continue probiotic for a at least a week or
so after. Without a those precautions, that open's your
system up to catch most bacterium that comes your way
and can start a domino effect on your health.
In order to keep your immune system on track avoid
processed foods as much as possible and stick with fresh
fruits and vegetable as much as possible, preferably
organically grown without chemicals and pesticides.
Take a good liquid, powder or capsule vitamin and a
liquid mineral daily. Nutrients are not found in most of
our foods in the amounts that will keep us healthy.
Nutritional supplements are an everyday necessity in
our lives and one that you should take very seriously if
you wish to skip this seasons colds and flu season!

Organic vs. Conventional - Pesticides Buggin' You?
Pesticide residues have been found in US state and federal
food tests of organic produce.
In 2002 studies found that organic food did have some pesticide
residues, but it showed that, compared to conventional food the
rate of contamination in organic was far lower. The number of
pesticides found was much lower and multiple residues were rare
on organic samples. Also where organic had residues, the residue
levels were much lower.
Reasons why pesticides occasionally are found on organic food:
Unavoidable, long-term environmental contamination:
For instance, some pesticides, like DDT, were banned 30 years
ago but still are in the environment. The banned pesticides most
often found in organic food are DDT and its metabolite DDE, dieldrin,
and heptachlor. About 3 percent of 600 organic samples had
detectable levels of persistent banned pesticides.
Spray drift or contact with contaminated surfaces:
Pesticides can drift from adjacent fields or stick to packing
equipment and contaminate organic food with trace levels of
pesticides. About 4 percent of 600 organic samples had pesticide
levels that appeared to be the result of spray drift or contact with
contaminated surfaces. Despite these reasons and small levels it is
still safer to eat organic.
Pesticides are used regularly on conventional/non-organic fruits
and vegetables. Some pesticides are used more heavily on
certain foods and it's important to know so you can choose
wisely. Here is a rundown of the ones with the highest levels.
Fruits to Avoid - apples, spinach, peaches, pears, strawberries,
nectarines, cherries, red raspberries, imported grapes
Vegetables to Avoid - spinach, bell peppers, celery, potatoes,
hot peppers
The least effected foods that you can buy non-organic are -
corn, cauliflower, sweet peas, asparagus and broccoli.
When Organic foods are out of range for your budget or they
are not available the next best thing is to locate a co-op farmer's
market and purchase your fruits and vegetables locally. Here is
a site to use. Enter your zip-code to find the nearest one to
you. http://www.localharvest.org/
Be sure to thoroughly wash all produce. Apple cider vinegar and
hydrogen peroxide 3% (available in most super markets) are 2
effective washes. They can be diluted to 1/4 cup each per gallon
of soak. For more complete removal of contamininents use both.
Use clean vegetable brush and scrub, let soak for 5 minutes.

The Carbohydrate Debate
by Renee Kennedy
To eat or not to eat carbohydrates. that is the question.
There are good carbs and there are bad carbs.
How can we tell the difference and how do we know
what to eat?
The old way of classifying carbohydrates:
Complex Carbohydrates provide fiber, vitamins,
minerals and energy. Some foods that contain complex
carbohydrates are whole grain bread, legumes like peas
and beans, pasta, rice, and starchy vegetables.
Simple Carbohydrates are broken down quickly to
provide energy. Simple carbohydrates are found
naturally in milk, fruits and vegetables. Simple carbs
are also found in processed foods like syrup, soda,
and refined sugar found in many processed baked goods.
In this way of classifying carbs, it is recommended that
we limit our intake of simple carbs and get most of our
carbohydrates from complex carbs.
The new way of classifying carbohydrates:
The Glycemic Index (GI) measures how quickly blood
sugar rises after ingesting a food with carbohydrates.
Eating a diet full of foods that have been rated with a
high GI may contribute to an increased risk of diabetes
and heart disease.
Highly processed or highly refined carbohydrates have
been found to have a high GI - foods like white bread,
white rice, white pasta, french fries and refined
breakfast cereals.
Whole foods will have a lower GI - legumes, whole
fruit, and whole grains like wheat, oats, barley, and
brown rice.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. Many other
factors influence the GI of a food. Fiber content,
fat content, ripeness, and type of starch also affect the
GI. Thus some foods like potatoes and bananas have
a high GI.
Diets that advise you to eat a low amount of
carbohydrates have gone part of the way to increase
awareness of the differences of carbs. The Glycemic
Index has also helped us to determine that all carbs are
not created equal. Some kinds of carbohydrates help
promote health, but others actually increase the risk for
diseases like diabetes and coronary heart disease.
What should we eat?
The general rule is that highly processed carbs are not as
good for us as natural carbs. How can we get away from
highly refined foods - it's everywhere you look!
Here are some techniques for buying food:
1. Educate yourself. learn to read the backs of packages
of food and know the difference between a processed food
and a natural food. (However, if it's packaged in a box,
bag, or can - chances are it's processed.)
2. Go to the store with a list.
3. Do not go to the store hungry.
4. Do not go to fast food restaurants. instead try out
diners or restaurants that boast home cooked meals.
5. Get your fruits and vegetables from farmers markets or
farm stands whenever possible. Not only will you save
money, you will also be getting better quality produce.

Health Question:
Is it possible to get my blood tested without seeing a doctor?
If this is possible I want to know what type of testing I should
have done for a thorough blood check up. Ellen H.
Dear Ellen,
Yes having blood work done is possible without a doctor's order.
The place to start is with a CBC/Chemistry Profile. Here is the
Life Extensions website that explains how it is done and what it
includes. Be sure and check for a reputable place. Life Extensions
is one of many available on or off the web.

Radiation Also Effects Your Pets
Greetings Human Friends,
I hope you all had a barkin' good summer. I felt exceptionally well this
summer and I really think it's those Global Water and Energy Cards
Margaret has been using on me. I feel less stressed from those scary
summer noises (fireworks - thunderstorms). She just places an energy
card under my collar or holds it on my back for a lilttle while if I
seem to be nervous or shaky. I also lay on my own energy card whenever
I feel like it because Margaret placed one on my pillow bed in her
office. I think it has improved my sense of well being as I am happy
and relaxed, except when those darn squirrels make their morning run
along the patio fence. I fell the need to take control and bark then
away, well I -do- need my exercise.
Margaret placed a water card on my drinking bowl a few months ago
and guess what ...... my dry nose is now moist, plump and cute as the
rest of me. Not bad for an ole' gal! Those are some of the effects
those great cards have on me.
I heard Margaret telling someone on the phone that the harmful
radiation present from TV, computers, and other electrical items are
also harmful to us pets. So I guess I'm being more protected than I
know and I could even be avoiding diseases before they have a
chance to grow. My friend Rufus, a Chihuahua mix, has shown
remarkable improvement with the energy card from a neuro disorder
he has had since birth. I wonder if these cards could turn me into a
Great Dane so I could reach the fence top when those squirrels run
by..........oh well I can dream can't I?
