NSAID's - The Jaw-Dropping Truth

by Shane Ellison M.Sc.
All Rights Reserved

In an effort to sell more drugs, medical ghost writing is the
practice of paying authors to write favorable drug reports for
pharmaceutical companies. The truth be known, medical
ghost writing leads to mass deception among medical doctors
and declining health among prescription drug users. Worse, it
can also lead to needless deaths.

To better illustrate the negative impacts of medical ghost writing
we look to Dr. M. Michael Wolfe. As a medical expert, editors of the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) sent him an
unpublished drug review on the arthritis medication Celebrex to
evaluate. At first glance, he was impressed by what he read. It
appeared that after six months of a company-sponsored study
involving more than 8,000 patients, the drug was associated with
lower rates of stomach and intestinal ulcers than two older
arthritis medicines, diclofenac and ibuprofen. Feeling confident
that the drug was safe, Dr. Wolfe and colleagues wrote a favorable
editorial about Celebrex to accompany the newly released findings in
JAMA. Consequently, millions of M.D.'s began prescribing the now
commonly used Celebrex.

As time passed, it was later learned that like many medical doctors
of today, Dr. Wolf was a victim of ghost writing. As fate would have
it, Dr. Wolfe later came across the complete data from the same
study as a member of the Food and Drug Administration's arthritis
advisory committee. Numerous discrepancies were seen between the
initial report and the newly found raw data. Most notably,
Pharmacia, the manufacturers of Celebrex, made it appear as if the
study lasted only 6 months. In reality, the study of Celebrex lasted
a year. During the last half of the year (which was unreported)
almost all of the ulcer complications that occurred during the study
were in Celebrex users.

When all of the data were considered, Dr. Wolfe stated that most of
Celebrex's apparent safety advantages disappeared. Unfortunately,
JAMA had already released the previously written findings that were
derived from the fabricated report along with Dr. Wolf's favorable
editorial. In an effort to discover why the initial report did not
illustrate the entire findings of the study, Dr. Wolfe found that
the study's 16 authors included faculty members of eight medical
schools. All authors were either employees of Pharmacia or paid
consultants of the company.

The Blatant lies and disregard for patients health gets worse.
Between 1990 and 1997 all clinical trials performed on non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Alleve, aspirin, Motrin,
Ibuprofen, Bayer, celecoxib --Celebrex®, diclofenac -- Voltaren®,
etodolac --Lodine®, fenoprofen -- Nalfon®, indomethacin -- Indocin®,
ketoprofen - Orudis®, Oruvail®, ketoralac --Toradol®, oxaprozin --
Daypro®, nabumetone -- Relafen®, sulindac -- Clinoril®, tolmetin --
Tolectin®, rofecoxib -- Vioxx® were sponsored by the drug
manufacturer! The result was that 100% of the studies showed the
sponsored drug to have equal or superior efficacy when compared to
other drugs.

The fallacies behind medical ghost writing of NSAIDS are quickly
exposed via increasing body counts among users. Despite the
fabricated studies showing NSAIDS to be safe, real-life observations
show that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized every year
for non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-related gastrointestinal
complications. Moreover, at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur
each year among arthritis patients. This figure, as reported by Dr.
Gurkirpal Singh, is comparable to the number of deaths from the
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS] and shows that NSAIDS
contribute to as many deaths as multiple myeloma, asthma, and
cervical cancer combined!

Although outrageously high, the aforementioned statistics do not
account for over-the-counter use of NSAIDS. Thus, we can be
confident that there are considerably more deaths caused by the use
of NSAIDS that go unreported. And because few medical doctors are
unaware of these statistics, NSAIDS can rightfully be considered a
silent killer, especially when "experts" are paid to write favorable
reviews and drug manufacturers carry out their own clinical studies.

Not being aware of this silent killer, millions of American's are
consuming NSAIDS on a daily basis on the false hypothesis that they
will successfully enhance their longevity. This will go down in the
history books as one of America's deadliest health myths. How many
people do you know who take an aspirin a day in an attempt to lower
their risk of heart disease? What about Celebrex?

Ghost writing is a common, yet rarely mentioned practice among the
drug industry. Very few professionals and patients are able to get
the real-scoop on the drug they are either prescribing or consuming.
This further illustrates the importance of seeking information about
natural alternatives which are not only effective but have killed
less people than bee stings.

Dealing With Depression
By Dr. Rita Louise

Depression or "depressive reactions" is a mood response that is often
brought on by the stresses and strains in our lives. For some, it
can be triggered by a serious loss, a difficult relationship,
financial problems or any overwhelmingly stressful situation. For
others it may be set off by medical conditions, drug or alcohol abuse
or hormonal changes. In recent years, it has been noted that certain
forms of depression can actually run in families.

Far more common than you may think, one in five women and one in ten
men can expect to experience some form of depression in their lives.
Depression can influence every aspect of your life. Although the
cause of depression is unknown, depression can leave you feeling sad,
irritable, indecisive, pessimistic, hopeless or empty. Sufferers can
also experience insomnia, fatigue, memory loss, restlessness, anxiety
and even rapid weight gain or loss.

Today, many people are aware of the drug therapy that is available
for depression. This includes pharmaceuticals such as Zoloft, Paxil,
Wellbutrin, and Prozac. These drugs, while helping to eliminate the
depression, can cause emotional "flatness". Instead of coming to
terms with the underlying causes of their depression these
medications suppress it.

Fortunately, there are a number of natural therapies, which can help
you manage mild to moderate depression. If you are currently on anti-
depressive drug therapy, it is important to work with your primary
care provider before incorporating these recommendations into your
life.

Recommendations For Wellness

Exercise! Regular physical activity has been shown to release
endorphins, the feel good chemicals in the body. It can also help
to reduce stress and build self-esteem.

Meditate! Meditation and other relaxation techniques work to calm
the mind and help to reduce stress, muscle tension and anxiety. It
can also promote emotional health and balance.

Many forms of psychotherapy have been shown to help depressed
individuals by helping them gain insight into and resolve their
problems.

Avoid alcohol, sedatives and antihistamines, as well as substances
that can alter ones mood such as caffeine and nicotine.

Increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids such as found in salmon.

St. John's Wort has been used for years to treat depression. Please
note it may take up to 2 months to notice its effects.

SAMe is an essential amino acid that helps the body manufacture
certain neurotransmitters, which promote the feelings of well-being.

5-HTP is a precursor to seratonin. Low seratonin levels have been
linked to feeling "down".

B-vitamins help to protect against depression. It is best to take a
B-complex that contains folic acid.

Never stop taking an antidepressant without consulting the doctor for
instructions on how to safely discontinue the medication.

Ready for 2004.........or Not?
Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

New Year's Resolution time is right around the corner. Most
of us repeat resolutions & often decide they are simply un-
attainable. Why this inability to change such important be-
haviors that threaten our health? The keys below may open
some doors for you. Why not make this year the last year
for repeated resolutions?

KEY: I
If you want to change, you must begin to think differently.
It's not enough to daydream a resolution . The road to
permanent lifestyle change takes time & a special kind of
planning & execution. Pre-resolution work includes having
a solid look at past failures & locating facets of the
resolution that need revamping. The willingness to observe
& work with past failures is key to success. In addition,
it's time to grow-up, wake up to truth & move out of un-
realistic expectations.

Meet Sue, a successful, but burned out executive who brought
her resolution daydream to my practice. "If I lose weight,
my life will balance. I'll be completely happy & never
complain again! However, I've never been able to lose
weight & keep it off & so I guess I need some magic! Per-
haps I shouldn't do this before the holidays or while I have
so much stress in my life." It's easy to see that Sue is
already lost in mind confusion, has no plan & has even pro-
grammed herself for failure before beginning.

KEY: II
Sue looks for magic, but heightened awareness is the route
to success. Magic erodes her personal power. Her mode of
travel needs change, as well as her power of observation.
She needs to train her mind to notice the unfolding moments
of her day, what works & what doesn't. These are small
resolution facets including thoughts emotions & actions. As
they are brought to awareness, stress is released & the
facets are ready for editing change. These then become new
mind etchings, the beginning of new patterns, that will en-
hance Sue's ability to succeed.

KEY: III
It is imperative to uncover the auto-pilot programs. This
is a matter of becoming expert at self-observation. As Sue
learns to pay attention to her body communications,
emotional patterns & resistances she will spot these, as
well as other levels of her patterns that may have gone un-
noticed for years. Once spotted, she can work to reprogram
these with those that benefit the resolution. On auto-
pilot, Sue is out of the editing-game. Her heightened
awareness is blocked & she can't spot the facets. She is
blinded & may trip instead of skip on the stones that line
her path. The chances that she will fall & not get up are
very high. She might appear next year with her weight loss
resolution, but this time more heavily etched for failure.

KEY: IV
The practice of heightened awareness, also known as mindful-
ness is vital to both stress management & achievement.
Adding Interactive Self-Hypnosis helps to position images
that assist the mind in waking up in specific moments. As
Sue learns to apply this practice to the facets of her
resolution, she will notice that she is awakened to other
moments that have connections she might have missed, es-
pecially stress-related ones.

The actual practice tools are very simple, their power sit-
ting in this simplicity. Sue learns to purposefully ex-
perience inner stillness, fractionated throughout her day.
She comes to know stillness as separate from mind chatter.
As her mind wanders, Sue brings her attention back to the
sensation of stillness or the goal at hand. She comes to
understand that her thoughts are mind programs that are
presented by her emotions & as she isolates these she can
examine the contents further, simply by request to her sub-
conscious librarian. As Sue goes throughout her day, she
begins to notice the playing of thoughts & emotions as they
apply to her resolution facets. As she contains these in
her consciousness, she is free to edit, as they were caught
in a mindful moment.

It's important to know that there are many health benefits
to this practice of awareness coupled with interactive self-
hypnosis. When are thoughts are predominating the awake
state, the brain waves are going very fast, producing a
large quantity of stress chemicals. These chemicals are
responsible for making important changes in the body, often
disrupting important systems, such as blood pressure, heart
rate, metabolism, blood sugar levels, gastro-intestinal
functioning including digestion, endocrine function & that
of the neurological system. During the practice of frac-
tionated stillness, the brain waves & stress hormone pro-
ductions slow down, bringing homeostasis or balance back to
the body & mind. The mind is now free for the programming
of healthy active imagery.

Sue is learning to wake-up to her emotional & thoughts that
make her life patterns & resolution facets. As she works to
couple awareness with "Interactive-Editing Imagery" she
removes herself from her failure mode & utilizes this moment
to transition to one of success.

Margaret,
I purchased the Global Cards, both energy and water.
I use them both regularly and I find I'm drinking less
water and I require less sleep. I have had them for 3
months. Is this expected and is it ok?
Stan

Hi Stan,

You point out some interest observations. I don't
know how much water you were drinking before
but it makes sense that you may require less
water seeing that the carded water is more energized
and hydrating while even the purest water is considered
'dead' in comparison.

The Global Energy Card is a balancer. If you wear it
during the times you are exposed to harmful radiation,
which exits practically everywhere, it will help your mind
and body to operate without those draining effects.
Therefore at the end of the day you will not be as tired.
Many find it counteracts pain which also contributes to
fatigue.

Using both the Global Water and Energy Card are winning
combinations for improved feelings of health and well being.
