The sale of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) organized by Sustainable Energy
Resource Group and the Thetford Energy Committee at this year's Thetford town
meeting was an overwhelming success. In all, 380 Harmony CFLs were sold - 187 -
25-watt spirals (which replace 100-watt incandescents) and 193 -15-watt
mini-spirals (which replace 60-watt incandescents).
These high-performance bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescents, have good
color rendering, reduce energy use, save money and are better for the
environment. Over their lifetimes these bulbs will cumulatively:
- use 227,100 fewer kilo watt hours of electricity
- save their owners $27,252 in electric use, and
- release 200 fewer tons of CO2 to the atmosphere.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who made this sale
possible. Efficiency Vermont helped us set up the whole program, provided
educational literature and discount coupons on the lights and donated free EVT
mugs to bulb buyers. Fogg's Hardware supplied the bulbs at very low cost so that
we could pass on the savings to our customers and still raise some money for
energy education efforts at Thetford Academy and Thetford Elementary School.
Vermont Energy Education Program taught folks how much less energy it takes to
light the fluorescent bulbs by providing rides on their Energy Bike. And the
school kids did a great job distributing flyers about the event!
SERG looks forward to helping promote similar sales in other towns in the
future.
