East Timor: TV series, book fair promote use of Portuguese language
Dili, Dec. 5 (Lusa) - Officials unveiled an
eight-episode television series for Portuguese
language instruction Monday in the East Timorese capital.
Produced by the Dili bureau of Portugal's public
broadcaster RTP at the request of its East
Timorese counterpart, RTTL, the series is modeled
on a similar radio project launched in 2002.
At independence in 2002, East Timor adopted
Portuguese as one of two official languages, along with the local Tetum.
Lisbon's aid to its former territory is heavily
centered on education and on the re-introduction
of Portuguese in the wake of a quarter century of
Indonesian occupation, during which the language was banned.
In another initiative, Dili's eight-day-long 2nd
Lusophone Book Fair closed Sunday, with officials
saying more than 80,000 books had been sold at cut-rate prices.
The Portuguese embassy's education attaché, José
Revez, said the event had been so successful that
a proposal would be made to Lisbon to underwrite
the opening of a permanent Lusophone book store in Dili.
The book fair was an initiative of the Community
of Portuguese- speaking Countries (CPLP) in
tandem with public and private Portuguese
institutions and the Portuguese and Brazilian embassies.
