East Timor: Portuguese teachers returning to resume classes closed by crisis
Dili, Aug. 24 (Lusa) - More than 100 Portuguese teachers will return
to East Timor to resume classes interrupted by the recent wave of
violence next week, the education project coordinator said Thursday.
Filipe Silva told Lusa the 107 Portuguese teachers, who returned home
in June after the crisis closed East Timor's schools, would be back
in classrooms on Sept. 4 to complete the academic year and prepare
national exams.
The teachers are primarily involved in a bilateral program to re-
introduce Portuguese, one of the newly independent country's two
official languages, but one known by only a fraction of the
population following 24 years of Indonesian occupation.
They administer a three-year Portuguese-language course for Timorese
teachers and give language classes to civil servants.
