2: LAST CALL

It's not too late to join us for the reunion. If there's anyway you can
make it, put your order form and check into the mail today and we'll see
you in San Diego in 33 days. This will be the last Reunion Related
Newsletter sent to everyone. All additional reunion related emails will
be sent only to those actually attending the reunion. Normal Newsletter
delivery will resume shortly after the Reunion during the 1st week in
September.

3: CRUISE NEWS

***THIS JUST IN***
The Reunion Committee has some great news regarding our San Diego Dinner
cruise. Reunion President Rufus Reaves informs me that as of last week,
we received enough orders for the Horne Reunion Committee to charter its
own PRIVATE dinner cruise. Previously we had planned to be on a public
dinner cruise. Having a PRIVATE cruise means we will have the boat all
to ourselves. We say when we leave, we say when we eat and we say when
we return. Special thanks to Rufus who has been negotiating this three
hour cruise for months. Finally, after crunching all the numbers, they
add up in our favor and we have our own PRIVATE cruise. We are currently
scheduled to go out on a vessel called the Monterey. You can read all
about her at:

http://www.sdhe.com/monterey.html

4: NAME TAGS

Each Shipmate Package ($150) includes a Welcome Aboard Pamphlet, a
Commemorative USS Horne Reunion Coin, A Cruise Book and a name tag. The
reunion committee wanted each of these items to be high quality
keepsakes and not throw-way items. This includes the name tag. Instead
of the usual "HELLO MY NAME IS: ___________" kind of name tag, a special
3"x4" Horne Reunion Name tag has been created. The name tag includes a
3" x 4" vinyl holder and a custom USS Horne lanyard with metal bull nose
clip. Your name tag is included in the price of the Shipmate package and
will be available for pickup in the Horne Hospitality room on September
28th and 29th, 2003.

Name tags are also available (but not required) for guests for an
additional charge of $5.00. If you would like a name tag for your guest,
including the vinyl holder and custom lanyard, please send me the
guest's first and Last name. You will then pickup and pay for your guest
name tag at the hospitality room. Send Guest Tag Requests to:
ic-@usshorne.net

You may see a sample of the Reunion Name Tag now posted in the Reunion
Section on the Horne site. You can also take a sneak peak at the cover
of the Welcome Aboard packet at:

5: HOTEL STUFF

The hotel has informed us that any room in the Horne Block of 100 rooms
not reserved by September 7th will be made available to the public. So
if you were putting off reserving a room, don't wait any longer. Call
the Town and Country and reserve your room today. 1 800 772 8527

For those of you staying at the Hotel, be sure you get your breakfast
coupons and also be sure you only pay the special Horne Reunion $1 Rate
for parking instead of the regular $10 rate. This also applies to those
of you who are arriving at the hotel early. As a reunion attendee... you
are entitled to the breakfast coupons and $1 per day parking for up to
three days BEFORE the reunion and 3 days AFTER the reunion. If you have
any trouble with either of these items, contact Horne Reunion President
Rufus Reaves immediately. 858. 566.3708. He'll take care of you.

Also, please note, for those of you NOT staying at the Hotel, you are
STILL entitled to $1 per day parking. If YOU have any trouble getting
this rate, contact Rufus! 858.566.3708.

While you're at it... now would be a good time to write down a couple of
phone numbers and keep them handy in case you need to contact us while
you are at the reunion.

6: SHIP VISIT

Due to the nature of the visit to the USS John C. Stennis, (some
climbing and non-stop sea stories) some reunion attendees may not want
to go on this tour. If you and/or your guest are NOT planning to attend
the Ship Visit, please let me know ASAP. We are ordering bus
transportation next week and need to know exactly how many are planning
to attend the visit to the USS John C. Stennis. Contact IC-@USSHorne.net

Horne Reunion Organizing Committee Treasurer Lou Maggi will soon be
meeting with the Stennis Public Affairs officer who will need to have an
accurate list of each person attending the Ship Visit. More details
coming soon.

7: DIRECTIONS TO HOTEL

You will find printer friendly directions to the Hotel at:

http://www.usshorne.net/reunionmap.htm

The directions now also include the phone numbers mentioned above.
Whether you are driving, or flying, print this page out now and bring it
with you to the reunion.

8: AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION

For those needing transportation from the Airport to the T&C Resort,
Resort officials recommend

CLOUD NINE SHUTTLE: $9 from Airport to T&C

or

ORANGE CAB: $14 from Airport to T&C

[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]

9: BARTENDERS WANTED

We still need a few more people to volunteer for bartender shifts in the
Horne Hospitality room. You don't need to be an expert. Just know the
difference between a Margarita and a Diet Pepsi! If you would like to
help out, contact Rufus:

HorneR-@WebTV.net

By the way, anybody wanting to run for governor while in California
should visit the California Secretary of State's office.

10: REUNION PHOTOS

We will have a professional photographer taking photos throughout the
Reunion. Many of these photos will appear in the Reunion Cruise Book
delivered six to eight weeks AFTER the reunion. For those of you who are
interested, the photographer will also be taking orders for a CD Rom
that includes ALL photos (several hundred) taken at the reunion.

Also, all reunion shipmates are encouraged to bring Navy photos of you
during your time on Horne. (Photos will be returned but preferably you
should bring quality copies). These photos will be scanned and included
on the photo CD. More details at the Horne Hospitality Room. But please
bring some of those classic old Navy Photos, especially if you have the
one from boot camp in front of the flag.

11: RIBBONS / AWARD INFO

Captain T.J. Barnett, Commanding Officer of Horne from 1989-1991 has
helped me research details about Horne Awards / Ribbons. New information
is now posted in the Horne History section about Horne Awards, and where
possible, award dates are posted as well. Special Thanks to Captain
Barnett for his help on this project.

Captain Barnett has also been extremely helpful in helping the Reunion
Organizing Committee obtain some very rare Horne related items from the
Navy Historical Center at the Washington DC Navy Yard. I can't say
anything else except that we have some neat things planned for the
banquet and Captain Barnett has been instrumental in making them
possible.

12: NAVY.MIL

The official US Navy Website is www.Navy.mil. Of all the Websites for
all the decommissioned ships in the history of the Navy, only 1 (THAT'S
ONE) is posted on the OFFICIAL US Navy Website. I'll give you three
guesses which ship that is... (and the first two don't count). See:

http://www.navy.mil/nol/ralpha.html

13: BMCM MAURICE FENNELL (PLANKOWNER)

Horne Reunion President Rufus Reaves received some very sad news today
from the wife of BMCM Maurice Fennell who lived in the San Diego area.
Maurice was a Plankowner who also attended the Decommissioning Ceremony
in 1994. He was very excited about attending the reunion and looking
forward to seeing so many of his shipmates. But Mrs. Fennell today
reported the sad news that Maurice has passed away. She wanted the
Reunion Committee to let Admiral Turner and all of the shipmates who
knew him know how much they meant to him and how much he was looking
forward to being with them at the reunion. Our thoughts and prayers are
with Mrs. Fennell.

To all of our fallen shipmates:

And when at length her course is run,
Her work for home and country done,
Of all the souls that in her sailed
Let not one life in thee have failed;
But hear from heaven our sailor's cry,
And grant eternal life on high!
