Recently, news reports have come out about the problems FairPoint is having implementing their cutover from Verizon and providing an acceptable level of service. The PUCs in Maine and New Hampshire and the Vermont PSB are pressuring FairPoint and their consultants to produce and implement a viable recovery plan.
While there is plenty of blame to go around, it is important to keep sight of the fact that these problems are ultimately due to Verizon's ill-advised sale of our landlines. Verizon used an obscure tax loophole called a Reverse Morris Trust to maximize its sale profits while abandoning its service commitment to our state.
However, we are not powerless. Verizon still provides wireless (cell phone) service in Vermont. We can use our purchasing power to send Verizon a message about abandoning our state by switching off Verizon just like it switched off Vermont.
Information on how to switch off Verizon can be found at www.switchoffverizonwireless.com
