The facts

Let's start with the facts. About creating drawings in
AutoCAD. These are the facts. This is how it is. And it
looks very bad.

1. Creating a drawing in AutoCAD takes an awful lot of
time. Four hours for a drawing. That's quick. A day?
   That's more like it.

2. That's what most AutoCAD users think. A lot of time
for creating an AutoCAD drawing. That's normal.
That's how it is. You cannot change it.

3. Nobody talks about speeding up AutoCAD. You can
speed up AutoCAD significantly by programming for
AutoCAD. Getting a drawing within one minute!

That's what I do. I wrote programs for AutoCAD. With my
programs you can save time and money when working on
AutoCAD. You'll get your drawings right away.

Do you want to keep on working as you always did? You
know. Wasting time and money. Or do you want to make
changes. And get things done more quickly.

Take action. Get in touch. Tell me what you want. And
I'll make you a proposition. A good one. Send me an e-
mail. Use this e-mail address:

My Son

I was thinking about my son. We have a problem. When I
bring him to school. The fathers of his classmates are
much younger than me.

The fathers of his classmates are below thirty. Most of
them. The older ones are below forty. And there I cme.
Fifty plus. You didn't know?

But I found a solution for the problem. "Look", I said
to my son, "at home you call me dad. At school you call
me grandfather".

Piece. You know. Being a father. You want to be
recognized as a father. Especially by your son. Well.
No recognition. For the piece.

But my son makes me proud. He started with playing
checkers. I taught him the game. Only after a few games
he was beating me!

Now no more checkers. My son found a new game. Chess.
He is already number one in school. There is this
teacher. My son beats him.

I was talking to my son. I asked him about exercises. I
asked him about jogging and so. But my son has got a
lot of exercises.

Sitting. Behind the chess plate. Moving his arm. To
reposition a chess piece. Taking the bus. When he goes
to school.

One thing. I have no son. But I already know. When I
have a son. Playing grandfather, my son playing chess,
and all the exercises.

New Book

I finished writing a new AutoCAD book. In the book is
explained what's new in AutoCAD 2005. A lot. Read
about it in the book.

The book is on the ACAD Books web site. You can find
the book there. And you can order it from there. Only $
19.95.

I also wrote a free version of the book. For if you
want to know how the real thing looks. Download it from
the web site.

The web site address? I've mentioned it in the previous
newsletter. But here is it again.

Facts

Talking about AutoCAD. Here are the facts. It's about
what most AutoCAD users are thinking and how AutoCAD
things are.

1. It takes an awful lot of time before an AutoCAD
drawing has been created. Four hours. But that’s
quick. A day. A couple of days. That’s more like it.

2. The time used for creating an AutoCAD drawing. Most
AutoCAD users think it’s normal. And there is
nothing that can be done about it.

3. Nobody is telling about programming for AutoCAD. How
programming for AutoCAD can help you to save time
   and money with AutoCAD.

Do you agree? Let me know.

Presentations

That's something new I'm doing now. I'm giving
presentations. To architects, engineering firms, and
other AutoCAD users.

I tell them about programming for AutoCAD. I tell them
and I show them what can be done for programming. How
to save time and money.

That was my last presentation. Seven people were
attending my presentation. At the end people could ask
questions.

A lot of questions came up. Three people came with what
could be business. I'm now working on a couple of
things for one of them.

This man wants to engage me for a AutoCAD course. He
has got four girls working for them. They must learn
AutoCAD.

That man is in swimming pools. Now he wants to have
three programs. First a program for drawing swimming
pools.

That is the next step. A drawing of a swimming pool has
been created. Now he needs an isometric drawing of the
swimming pool.

I don't know how to do it. But I'll write a program for
him. The program will create an isometric drawing of
the swimming pool drawing.

That's the last program he wants. A lot of
calculations. The pumps, the filters, the pipes. He
wants a program for the calculations.

The second person is doing engineering drawings. He
asked me whether that could be automated. I'll go to
this office and have a look at his drawings.

The third man is the manager of a CAD department. He
has got 25 people working for him. I will see him at
his office.

I'm sure there is a lot I can do for him. He will have
a lot of programming. Maybe some courses too. Who
knows. Business.

It looks that a lot of jobs is coming in my direction.
That's a problem. Because there is only one Jos van
Doorn. So I need support.

I already know. If I find a man or a woman that wants
to go into programming for AutoCAD. I will train that
person. He only needs to know AutoCAD.

Sorry, folks. I gave presentations. In Malaysia, in
Kuala Lumpur. Don't ask me to come to the States or any
other place. Can't.

Illegal Software

Good morning people. This is Malaysia. We have an awful
lot of illegal software here. And anybody is using it.
Private persons and companies.

Take AutoCAD. AutoCAD is sold for RM 16,000. That's
about $ 4,500. Many architects and engineering firms
cannot afford that amount.

So what do they do? They go to a place in Kuala Lumpur.
Everybody knows that place. Except the police. The
police never found that place.

Anyway. They go there. And then they buy an illegal
copy of AutoCAD. AutoCAD 2005? No problem. It is there.
Only RM 5. Less than $ 2.

That's what they told me. More than 80% of the
architects and engineering firms is using illegal
software.

Now there is an alternative for AutoCAD. It's called
IntelliCAD. Ever heard about it? IntelliCAD is sold for
RM 1,380. Much cheaper than AutoCAD.

I wrote a book about AutoCAD 14. I must make changes to
the book. I must write a book about IntelliCAD. Now
they have version 4.

Have a good read.

Going to another country

That's what I did. I was saying that it is a good idea
to go to another country. I was saying that things are
much easier in another country,

Let me be more specific. I went to another country and
after a while things were much better. There I could do
what I always wanted to do.

I was in Holland. There I was the average guy. Working
hard and only getting small money. I could have done
better if I were a rat.

But I'm no rat. I'm a nice person. At least that's what
I try to be. But then that's not appreciated. So I only
made little money.

I was getting frustrated. I had seen how bosses keep
you short. For them you are only a commodity. Like a
pen, a writing block etc.

I was really fed up with bosses, with my work. So I
decided to start traveling. I was in South America
for three month.

Back home I wanted to travel again. I wanted to go to
another part of the world. A year later I went to South
East Asia.

I spend one month in Indonesia and one month in
Malaysia. Then I went back. Six month later I was gone
again. To Indonesia.

In Indonesia I had met some nice people. I went back to
them. But now they were completely different. Now they
were only interested in my money.

I started traveling again. I came to Malaysia and I
went to Thailand. There I was a language teacher. But
that was not what I wanted to do.

I went away from Thailand. And I went back to Malaysia.
I already knew that Malaysia was a good country to go
to and to make a living.

First I was three years in Kota Bahru in the north of
Malaysia. And then I went to Kuala Lumpur. I had met a
lady from there. I married her.

In Kota Bahru I was working as a free lancer. I'm very
much in AutoCAD. In Kuala Lumpur I continued with
working as a free lancer.

And then I found a customer. He had a lot of AutoCAD
work. He wanted to engage me. At first I was working
for him as a freelancer.

I talked to him. I suggested that he would hire me as
an employee. That’s what he did. He offered me a job.
And I'm working in his company now.

This is how I did it. I always wanted to work full-time
in AutoCAD. In Holland I never had the change to find a
suitable job. I had no support.

Here in Malaysia I found such a job. I found a well
paid job. The money is very good. And things look
really good.

I bought a new car. I bought an apartment. I have
nothing to worry about. And I can see of lot of work
coming to me.

The firm I’m working for gave me a contract for a year.
But they arranged for a working permit for two years. So
my contract will be extened.

And the there are plans to expand the business and to
build a new factory. That will happen in about four or
five years.

The company already suggested that I go to the new
factory. I guess they want me to help the people there
with AutoCAD.

I’ve got a future here. I'm very much in AutoCAD and my
job is all about AutoCAD. The coming years I'm still
working here.

One thing. I came to this part of the world about six
years ago. I find it a pity. I should have done it much
earlier. At least ten years earlier.

4. AutoLISP tip

Protecting Your Program

You have been working on a program for a long time. You
want to protect it. You don't want anybody to steal it
and run away with it.

What can you do? There is a lot you can do. But here is
a very simple and very effective solution. It works
like hell.

Set an environment variable. And as the program starts
the value of that variable is checked. If it's OK then
the program runs.

You can set an environment variable using the SETENV
function. This is how it could be done:

(setenv "UserName" "MeAndMeAlone")

To find the environment variable the GETENV function is
used. This is how it is done:

(getenv "UserName")

This function will give back "MeAndMeAlone". Of course
in this example.

The environment variable is stored in the USER.DAT
file. That file can be found in the Windows folder.
Open it with Notepad and look for it.

That is important. The environment variable is case
sensitive. So in the example you must specify
"UserName" and not "username".

Here's a little program that demonstrated the use of
this feature. Change it and put it into your own
programs.

(defun fndun (/ un)
   (setq un (getenv "UserName"))
   (if (= un "MeAndMeAlone")
(princ "\nYou can run the program")
(princ "\nThief. You stole my program!")
   )
)

You set the environment variable at the command prompt
of AutoCAD. You use the SETENV function for doing that.
That is clear.
