My story
Dear AutoCAD user,
I am about to tell you a true story. It could change
the very way you look at AutoCAD. You could decide to
make AutoCAD much better for you.
Here's how it all got started. And what I did.
I was sending out e-mails to engineering firms. I was
offering my services as a programme for AutoCAD. I
didn't get much replies.
But there was a reply from SKB Shutters in Shah Alam.
They wanted to talk to me. I told them that I could
help them with AutoCAD.
We talked. SKB was making AutoCAD drawings. The AutoCAD
drawings were very bad. They just took old drawings and
were changing the dimensions.
The dimensions were changed. But the sizes of the parts
stayed the same. So their AutoCAD drawings were not
very accurate.
They wanted to have programs for AutoCAD. The programs
had to create complete AutoCAD drawings. But the
drawings had to be exact.
I created the program for them. I created seven
AutoCAD programs for them. The programs created
AutoCAD drawings within one minute.
The programs were working with dialog boxes. The dialog
boxes were filled in. After filling in all dialog boxes
the AutoCAD drawing was created.
I have finished my job for SKB. I'm no longer working
for them. I'm back to square one. Sending out e-mails
and offering my services.
But enough of the story. You are most probably asking
yourself, "What has the story got to do with me? Why do
I want to know?".
This is what the story has got to do with you. Like
SKB. You're working with AutoCAD. Working with AutoCAD
costs a lot of time and money.
I can help you to shorten the time used and to save
money. Now you're making maybe one AutoCAD drawing a
day. That could be 100 or even more.
There's more to it. Once an AutoCAD drawing is created
using my program, then you don't have to check the
AutoCAD drawing.
The AutoCAD drawing is created according standards. So
there is no need for checking the AutoCAD drawings. The
AutoCAD drawings are OK.
You must ask yourself what you want. Do you want to
keep on working with AutoCAD as you do now? Or do you
want to improve AutoCAD?
If you want to improve AutoCAD, then come to me. Get in
touch with me. And I'll help you out. I'll make it
worthwhile for you.
Take action. Send an e-mail to:
acadprog-@hotmail.com.
Write "Story" in the subject line. Or give me a
call. In Malaysia. This is my number: 012-9312742.
Sincerely,
Jos van Doorn. AutoCAD specialist and AutoLISP
programmer. Also publisher ACAD Newsletter. About
AutoCAD and AutoLISP. FREE. To subscribe send a blank
e-mail to:
mailto:acadnewslett-@hotmail.com
P.S. I found your e-mail address in the paper. You
were looking for an AutoCAD man. After I help
you, you don't need that AutoCAD man.
P.P.S. I work on a "no cure, no pay" base. If you
don't save you time and money, then I'll work

XP tip
I received the following e-mail from Ray. I think he
gave us a very good tip. I didn't know. But what he
said is true. I checked it.

Subject : Saving text files in Notepad
Jos,
I am glad to see you survived the tsunami.
In your Vol 05, No 05 ACAD newsletter, in the "3D
Animation" article, you mentioned the necessity of
renaming lisp files after saving them in Notepad.
Something you may not be aware of is the fact that if
you save them with quotation marks, Notepad will not
add the txt extension.
Just use the following procedure:
"ANMTN.LSP"
It is much easier than renaming later. I am assuming
that it will work in non-English versions of the
program.
I hope this will work for you.
Ray
=======================================================
Ray made a remark about a non-English version of
Windows XP. Here in Malaysia. I've got the English
version.
About IntelliCAD
I was talking about IntelliCAD. I don't know about in
your country. But here in Malaysia IntelliCAD is far
less expensive than AutoCAD.
AutoCAD is sold here for RM 16,000 plus. That's the
full version. You also have AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD LT is
sold for RM 4,000 plus.
There are two version of IntelliCAD. There is the
Classic version and there is the Pro version. Classic
is RM 1,200. Pro is RM 1,500.
If you're using the Classic version, then you can only
create 2D drawings. No 3D. That is the same as AutoCAD
LT. But there is a difference.
AutoCAD LT doesn't support programming in AutoLISP. You
cannot run your AutoLISP program in AutoCAD LT. But you
can in Classic.
If you're in 3D, then you need the Pro version. The Pro
version has got commands for creating a3D drawing. More
than AutoCAD has.
IntelliCAD is very much the same as AutoCAD. It has got
the same commands. And drawings are saved as a DWG
file. As in AutoCAD.
So. If you're a proficient AutoCAD user, you can work
with IntelliCAD. You will absolutely have no
difficulties at all.
Find out how the program looks. Go to the web site of
IntelliCAD and download a trial version. Use it and see
what it does.
You can download the trial version for the Classic
version and the trial version of the Pro version. On
the web site you can also find the prices.
This is the web site where you can find more
information about IntelliCAD and where you can download
the trial versions:
http://www.bricscad.com
For buying IntelliCAD there are two ways. You can get a
license key or you can get the program on CD with books
about the program.
The prices mentioned are for the license key. The
license key is used to make the trial version a
permanent one.
If you want the program on CD and you want to have
books, then there is an exct5ra charge. The extra
charge here is RM 250.
Sure. If you want to buy the program. You can come to
me. But you can also buy the program over the web site.
Same price.
CAD Books Web Site
Let's make some money. We do it like this. We open a
web site for CAD books. People can come to the web site
and buy the books.
I could do it on my own. But maybe you're interested in
joining me. Maybe we do this thing together. I'll give
you a share in the profit.
I've written many books. My books are about programming
for AutoCAD and they are about CAD programs: AutoCAD,
IntelliCAD, and other programs.
Six months ago I have opened a web site for my
programming books. I sold a lot of them. I made US $
180 with my books.
The web site that I have opened. It is a free web site.
Still. I could sell my books over that web site. That
wasn't any problem.
Now I want to open another web site. I want to open a
web site for CAD books. I want to put all my CAD books
on that web site.
For the web site you need sales copy. I already have
written all the copy for the web site. I already know
what web site I want.
It's now a matter of getting started. Opening a web
site and start selling the books. I already have some
ideas about what to do.
Are you interested? Would you like to join me? Can you
open a web site for me? What more can you do? Can you
help me to get sales?
The web site is finished. We could start with a free
web site. And later switch to a paid web site. But
there is more.
There is something with promotion of the web site. Do
you know about promotion? Do you know how a web site
can be promoted?
We put my books on the web site. But do you have
something that can be contributed to the web site?
Books or something else?
You know. I've got the ACAD Newsletter. I think it's
important to find more subscribers for the ACAD
Newsletter. Do you know about that one?
If interested, let me know. SAend me an e-mail. And
tell me what you can do. Write web site in the subject
line and send your e-mail to:
mailto:acadb-@hotmail.com
Those German guys!
Years ago. I was in Thailand. In a restaurant. Sitting
on a table. Five German guys were sitting there too. We
were talking.
I don't remember how we came to that one. But I said to
the German guys: "Here in Thailand. Don't lower your
pants. The ladies will get a heart attack".
I went on to explain why. "Look", I said to them, "men
in Thailand. Ten centimetres. That's a he man. So you
can imagine what happens".
I went on. "When you lower your pants and you stand
there with your 25 centimetres. The ladies are not used
to a size like that. They will pass out".
The Germans looked at each other. They were laughing.
They didn't know how special 25 centimetres is in
Thailand. I had another beer.
My Eyelids
So strange. Last night I was lying in bed. My wife
joined me. She stepped into the bed and was talking to
me. But my eyes were still closed.
"Open your eyes", she said. "Cannot", I mumbeled,
"tired". My wife. She insisted. "Open you eyes, open
your eyes".
I had to give an explanation. "I'm so tired. So tired
that my eyelid fell down. I cannot open them again. Not
until tomorrow".
Saved. I was saved. I could keep my eyes closed. I
didn't have to open them. My falling eyelids. Very
handy.
The West
I read a lot about the West. In the papers here. No
good. The West is no good. That's what the papers are
writing. Sex, sex, sex.
If you believe the papers, then everybody in the West
is sleeping around. People believe what the papers
write.
Years ago. A guy asked me. "If I go to Holland and I
see a pretty lady. Can I tap her on her shoulder and
ask her to sleep with me?"
He wanted to know. "Sure", I said to him. "Only two
things can happen. She slaps you in your face or she
tells you how much it is".
I know why the papers write these stories about the
West. First they want to be good friends with the
Ministry of Information.
No. I'm not talking about censorship. If I do, they
will kick me out of the country. And I want to stay in
this fantastic country.
The second reason. To make Malaysia look a much better
country then the rest of the world, especially the
West.
The West. Not Germany, England, or Holland. People do
not know about these countries. They only know about
the West. The end of the world.
Strange. I talk to people. They have been in Holland,
in Amsterdam. I ask them what hey have seen of Holland.
The Red Light district.
They were seven days in Holland. Seven days in
Amsterdam. Seven nights in the Red Light district. So
the West can't be that bad.
People
I never told you. But I like to read biographies. Of
famous people. What they did. How they did it. What
motivated them?
I've read a lot about Henry Ford and about General
George S. Patton. These people were really great. They
did a lot.
Henry Ford. He started the Ford car company. Was he a
genius? No way. He was in fact very clumsy. But he knew
exactly what he wanted.
There is this story about him. I read it in the "Think
and Grow Rich" book of Napoleon Hill. He wanted to
build a V8 engine.
There was no V8 engine. People tried to build one. But
they all failed. Still Henry Ford wanted to have a V8
engine.
Ford was already an established car company. Henry Ford
had a lot of engineers working for him. One day he
called them together.
"I want to have a V8 engine. Build one for me. I don't
care how long it takes". The engineers thought that was
impossible. They told Henry Ford.
Henry Ford pushed them to build the engine. So they
started. After six month. Nothing. After one year.
Nothing. But then after one and a half year.
The engineers found out how to build a V8 engine. And
that's what they did. They build the V8 engine. And
Henry Ford got the honors.
George S. Patton was a very good general. He was maybe
the best American general of the 20th century. Even
now. No general can match him.
That was 1942. The second American army was in North
Africa. They were engaged in a war against Rommel. And
they lost.
The general of that army was replaced by George S.
Patton. George S. made a lot of changes to the army.
Three month later. Again Rommel.
But this time the second army won. The battle was over.
And Rommel was beaten. That was the first time he was
beaten.
That is something George S. Patton changed. He told his
officers that they were no longer allowed to stay away
from the front.
His officers had to be in the front line as a battle
was going on. That ruling did a lot. The soldiers were
much more motivated.
I saw this movie about Patton. I saw the movie two
times. A sad story. George S. Patton was never
recognized for what he did.
No wimps
That's what the advertisement said. Drivers wanted, no
wimps. Very good. I thought. That's the job for me. I
take that job.
And when they ask me. Are you a wimp? I will tell them.
No sir. I'm no wimp. I know about AutoCAD and I know
about AutoLISP. But I'm no wimp.
Wait. I thought. Let's read the complete add. Because
the add said more than Drivers needed. No wimps. I was
reading the add.
Now the add became clear to me. They were selling cars.
You need to be a driver. For being able to ride that
car. You can't be a wimp.
Why is this always happening to me? I see an add. Yes,
I think. There is the perfect job for me. And then the
add is completely different.
If only all ads would have been the way I saw them. I
would have been prime minister. From Malaysia. I would
be running this country.
OK. Even if you're not like Henry Ford. Or George S.
Patton. Have a good read.
Jos

What can you do with the AutoLISP routine for the
animation? Well. You could run it in AutoCAD and see
how it works.
To run the AutoLISP routine in AutoCAD, you must first
copy it to a text file. Open Notepad of Windows and
copy it into that program.
Save the file under the name ANMTN.LSP. If you have
Windows XP, then check the file name. It could be
ANMTN.LSP.TXT.
That's a nice stupid feature of Notepad in Windows XP.
When a file is saved it always gets the extension TXT.
Even if you don't want that extension.
So when in Windows XP you must rename your file in
Windows. Remove that TXT extension. And we are ready to
continue.
You have your file saved. Now load it into AutoCAD. You
know how to that. Click on Tools opn the menu bar. A
pull-down menu shows up.
In the pull-don menu click on Load Application. The
Load AutoLISP, ADS, and ARX Files dialog box shows up.
Click on the File button.
The Select AutoLISP, ADS, and ARX file dialog box shows
up. By default all AutoLISP files are displayed. That
file type has been set.
Go to the folder where you saved the ANMTN.LSP file.
Find the file in the dialog box. Click on it and click
on the Open button.
You're back in the Load AutoLISP, ADS, and ARX Files
dialog box. The ANMTN.LSP file is highlighted. Click on
the Load button.
The Load AutoLISP, ADS, and ARX Files dialog box is no
longer displayed. And the ANMTN.LSP file is loaded into
AutoCAD.
Type ANMTN at the command prompt. And the 3D animation
will run. You will see the shaft and the two cylinders
at its ends.
The two cylinders will move. At first they move
inwards. And then they move outwards. They will move
outwards until they are no longer visible.
Thank you very much. This how you can do a 3D animation
in AutoCAD. To make it nicer you could do something
with render.
You could save each picture as a BMP file. And use all
the BMP files to create a GIF animation. I don't have
to tell how to do that, right?
You could save each picture of the animation as a BMP
file. And later use all these BMP files for make a GIF
animation. You know.

-------------------------------------------------------
4. Paper Space in AutoCAD 2005 3
-------------------------------------------------------
We started with talking about paper space in AutoCAD
2005. You’ve had the first part and the second. Here’s
the third part.
Again we use the STRETCH command. We make sure the
detail is visible in the newly created floating
viewport.
We're now going to add dimensions to the drawing in the
first floating viewport and to the detail in the second
floating viewport.
Before we do that we must set a dimension style. You
can create your own style. But I didn’t do that. I just
have set the sizes.
I gave the arrows and the text a size of 5. There was
also something with offset. For the offset I gave a
size of 1.25.
Now we can add dimensions to the drawing and the
detail. You know how you can add dimensions to a
drawing. Go ahead and do it.
That’s important. Make sure the borders of the
viewports are not drawn with a thick line. And you can
use an object snap or finding points.
The drawing is in a scale of 1:1. The detail has got a
scale of 1:5. Must we consider the different scales?
No, sir.
That's so nice about paper space. You can add the
dimensions and you don't have to worry about the scale
of the drawing.
The sizes of the dimensions that are drawn are as you
have set in the dimension style. So the dimensions text
has a height of 5.
The dimension text has got a height of 5 in the drawing
and also in the detail. That didn’t change. The height
stayed the same.
When we are dimensioning in model space we must do
something with a scale factor if we're dimensioning a
detail. Must we do it here too?
No. Just add the dimensions. Do nothing with the scale
factor. AutoCAD will find the correct sizes. No hanky
panky.
We could add some text to the drawing. We could do it
in paper space. Go ahead if you want. And don't worry
about a scale.
I presume you have set the height to zero as you were
creating a text style. As the text command starts there
is asked for a height.
The height you enter in the TEXT command is the height
that is used for the text. In your print the text will
have the specified height.
Before we go any further we must do something with the
Page Setup. We must select a printer. We click on File
in the menu bar.
A pull down menu shows up. In the pull down menu we
click on Page Setup Manager. The Page Setup Manager
dialog box is displayed.
