The facts about AutoCAD

1. It takes an awful lot of time before an AutoCAD
drawing is created. Four hours? That's quick. A day,
a couple of days? That's more like it is.

2. Most AutoCAD users think it is normal. The time it
takes toc reate an AutoCAD drawing. And that there
is nothing that can be done about it.

3. Nobody tells about programming for AutoCAD. What is
programming for AutoCAD? Can you do programming for
AutoCAD? Why shouls we do programming?

Do you want to know more? Take action if you want to
know more. Write an e-mail to:

2. Notes from the Publisher
-------------------------------------------------------

Being a King

I already mentioned that one. Somebody started a
primary. For me. He wants me to be king. That's a very
wise decision. As a king. I'm going to do things. What?

That's the first thing that I'm going to change. Every
week has got a Sunday. We don't work on Sunday. Very
good. I'll put two Sundays in every week.

I will do it like this. These will be the days of the
week. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Doesn't that
look good?

One problem. As the week starts. We have three working
days. At the end of the week. We have two working days.
OK. Two and a half. Because here in Malaysia they also
work on Saturday.

Maybe I'm going to change that. Add a couple more
Sundays to the week. Like adding six Sundays to the
week. Then we only have parts of one working day in the
week.

There is another thing that I want to change. I don't
know about you. But me. Married. Only one wife. That
number is too low. That number should be much higher.

I know this man. He has got four wives. He's a Muslim.
But that number is still too low. The number should be
seven. Or eight once I have changed the week.

Look. It is like this. For if the week hasn't been
changed yet. Seven wives. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
... Once I've changed the week. The number goes up to
eight. You already know why.

Jos for King. That's what you have seen. When I'm king.
We'll have the good times. So if you know what's good
for you. I told you about the elections. Vote for me.

Even if you're no king. Havea good read.

Jos

3. Paper Space
-------------------------------------------------------

I've talked about paper space. But that was about paper
space as it is found in AutoCAD 14. Now we have AutoCAD
2005. Paper space changed.

Let's start with a drawing. We create a drawing. We're
going to do some-thing with that drawing in paper
space. We'll make it ready for printing.

I cannot show pictures in the newsletter. So I must
give a description of the drawing that we're going to
create.

We start with a metric drawing in A4 drawing and in
landscape mode. You don't know A4? The size of an A4
drawing is 297 by 210.

Set the limits of the drawing to the size of an A4
drawing. Give a Zoom All. We want to fill the screen
with the A4 drawing.

We start with drawing a rectangle. The lower left
corner of the rectangle is at 50,50. The size of the
rectangle is 100 by 100.

Next we draw a circle. The mid point of the circle is
at 130,100. The radius of the circle is ten. That's all
we draw. For the drawing.

Because we also want a border. Draw a border with a
size of 297 by 210. Add an attribute to the drawing. In
the lower right corner.

Save the drawing. Give it the name DRAWING.DWG. Save
the border under the name BORDER.DWG. That's all. We
can now start with paper space.

This is what we want to do. We want to print the whole
drawing. But we also want to print a detail of the
drawing.

Let's consider the circle in the drawing as the detail.
We click on the Lay-out1 tab in AutoCAD. I presume you
haven't changed the name.

I forgot the tell you. But the drawing we just created,
is in the screen. We're now in paper space. We see our
drawing in a rectangle.

That rectangle. It's called a floating viewport. When
in paper space. We al-ways work with floating
viewports.
We can move them and change the size.

In the paper space view we also see a hidden line. The
hidden line indicates what area will be printed. Make
to have the drawing within the hidden line.

Let's change the size of the floating viewport. Click
on the border. Four han-dles appear. Move the cursor
over a handle, hold down the left mouse but-ton.

You can now change the size of the floating viewport.
You can also change the position of the floating
viewport.

Next time we talk more about paper space. We’ll see how
we can make our drawing in paper space ready for
printing.

Move the cursor over the border of the floating
viewport. And drag the floating viewport in a new
position.

That only works if the handles of the floating
viewports are displayed. Good. Now we must do something
with the scale factor.

We want to make sure the drawing in the floating
viewport has got a scale of 1. We double click on the
rectangle in the viewport.

The viewport is now activated. The border consists of a
thick line. We invoke the ZOOM command and type 1XP for
the scale factor.

We double click outside the floating viewport. The
floating viewport is no longer activated. We will now
add dimensions to the rectangle.

You know what dimensions we want. We want a horizontal
dimension and a vertical dimension. You can use an
object snap when dimensioning.

Before we add the dimensions to the drawing, we must
set the dimension style. You know how to set the
dimensions style.

We need a second floating viewport. We need the second
floating viewport for the detail. We type MVIEW at the
command prompt.

We can now pick two points. The two points are the
corner points of the floating viewport. In the floating
viewport is our drawing.

We want the detail to have scale of 1 to 5. First we
activate the second floating viewport. And then we
enter 5XP for the Zoom command.

But what's that. We don't see the detail no more. It
has disappeared. It's no longer in the second floating
viewport.

No problem. Use the PAN command. And move the detail in
the floating viewport. If it's too big, then change the
size of the floating viewport.

Let's add a radius dimension to the detail. That's so
nice. We don't have to make changes to the dimension
style.

The sizes of the radius dimension are the same as the
previous dimensions. Although we have changed the scale
factor.

We want to add a border to the drawing. We add the
border we just created. Use the INSERT command to
insert the border.

The border has got an attribute. You can give the
attribute a value. The size of the border is too big.
Change it using the SCALE command.

One last thing. We have floating viewports in our
print. But we don't wan them. We only want the drawing
with the detail.

Do it like this. Create a new layer. Call it Viewports.
And place the floating viewports on that layer. You can
do it over the Properties button.

Once that is done you can switch off the Viewports
layer. The floating view ports are no longer displayed.
You've got only your drawing.
