President responsible for preserving peace: Kalla
by Andi Hajramurni
Makassar, South Sulawesi
Vice President Jusuf Kalla says the President is responsible for
maintaining peace in conflict-prone regions such as Aceh and
Papua.
Kalla said the government, in this case the President, could
preserve a sustainable peace if it managed to significantly
improve the welfare of people in the conflict-prone regions and
fulfill their basic rights, such as education and access to
health services.
“The government must also continuously develop labor-intensive
industries to eradicate unemployment,” he said on the sidelines
of the inauguration of a new office building of the Indonesian
Communion of Churches (PGI) for south, west and southeast
Sulawesi (Sulselbara) in Makassar on Saturday.
He called on people to support the government’s peace-building
efforts by maintaining unity and brotherhood among themselves.
Kalla, a key figure behind the peace agreements in Maluku, Poso
in Central Sulawesi, and Aceh, promised to continue contributing
to peace preservation when he relinquishes his post as the vice
president.

Kalla supports progress-oriented candidates
by Andi Hajramurni
Makassar, South Sulawesi
Golkar Party leader Jusuf Kalla fell short of showing his
preference for his successor Saturday, although he spent time to
meet and greet one of the aspiring chairmen Surya Paloh during
his visit here.
Kalla said after the meeting he would support a candidate who
was committed to improving the party’s performance in the next
five years.
He said he and Paloh did not talk about anything specific about
the latter’s candidacy.
“However, Pak Surya did tell me about his visit to Papua and
Makassar and the enthusiasm of the regional branches that
supported his candidacy,” Kalla said.
Kalla appreciated the differences of opinion between provincial
chapters and regional branches concerning the candidates they
would vote for in the election of new Golkar leader next month.
“There is no problem with that. That is what we call democracy,”
he said . Kalla is scheduled to meet with another candidate,
Hutomo “Tommy” Mandala Putra, the youngest son of former
president Soeharto, in Makassar. However, the schedule is yet to
be determined.
