Todd, some suggestions;
On the requirements for the W2 form I would look at the IRS web site and dig
into it to find the regulations on W2 may be a time consuming research, but
gets the answers you want. Search on IRS forms (
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html ).
Or home pg (http://www.irs.gov/ ). Here too you can down load the W2 PDF.
And search on w2 gets you the docs you would need for the requirements (I am
taking all the fun out of the searching by doing it for you take a look
there).
At a previous employer I had to print W2 forms (several hundred thousand W2
for our “employees” we were a sort a temp agency for actors). Then Elixir
was what we had ( 20+ years ago) Any of the forms composition packages will
work, but costly and time consuming to learn.
The “poor-mans” or inexpensive way is to create AFP resources and data, by
getting the “IBM” now Infoprint AFP drivers for Windows. Then open the W2
PDF in Acrobat and print (assume you install the AFP Windows drivers) say
page 6 of the PDF to the appropriate AFP printer type setting the print
driver properties to create an overlay.
(I would test the overlay by viewing in an AFP viewer). Then up load the
overlay to the mainframe and re-block the file and rename to you call in the
P-def. Then Test, Test…
I would recommend looking to the XPLOR (www.xplor.org) web site for
presentations on APF drivers and Viewing, which Stephen Wowelko, edp and
Donald Scrima, edp, have done that would help in the use of the drivers.
Good luck on your adventure and I hope this was of help.

Todd,
Here are some quick and dirty ways to create your W-2 overlay.
1. you could go to the IRS website and download their W-2 form in .pdf
format, and then use the free IBM Windows AFP Driver to create the overlay.
(This method is guaranteed to be within their specs - as it is theirs!)
2. you could use a scanner and scan the current form and create a .pdf or
.rtf file and use the free IBM Windows AFP Driver to create the overlay.
3. you could hire a consultant (like me :o) to do it for you.
Hope this helps.

Subject: _[afp-l] using AFP to print W2s
We currently use AFP on an IBM mainframe to print our company employee W2
forms. We use preprinted forms and use AFP to place the data inside the
preprinted boxes. Due to issues with inconsistent forms and the cost of
preprinted forms, I am investigating other options.
I have searched and not found any information regarding the requirements I
would need to follow if I were to create an overlay to print the boxes and
other text that currently exists on our preprinted forms. Is anyone doing
this, using an overlay to print the boxes and other text? Does anyone know
where I can find information about the requirements (box size, font, etc.)
to print these forms? I only need to print the B, C and 2 copies (4-up
format) to give to our employees. Our submission to SSA is done
electronically, so I don't need to do anything with Copy A.
I could use a preprinted W2 form and duplicate it in an overlay, but I
thought there would be some sort of spec sheet existing for instructions
for W2 employee copies.
Thanks for your help.
