More on Shirley Dean:
Jean Siri's vacant seat should be filled by someone who will carry
forward Jean vision, someone who would honor Jean's work and the fact
that she had no intention of standing down to some of the very people
now seeking to replace her. The person best qualified for this
appointment is Shirley Dean. She has been working for 30 years to
create recreation opportunities, preserve the natural environment,
and protect San Francisco Bay as a volunteer, a member of the
Planning Commission, Waterfront Committee, City Council, 2 terms as
Mayor, and as the representative of East Bay Cities on BCDC. Shirley
Dean's commitment runs all the way from successfully working for a
5-year tax measure to increase Berkeley park lands, protecting the
waterfront, opposing oil drilling in the Arctic Wilderness,
establishing joint City/Park District fire services to protect our
homes from the wildfires, making our playground structures safe,
supporting access to off-leash dog areas in Cesar Chavez Park, Pt.
Isabel and elsewhere, leading the effort to build the acclaimed I-80
pedestrian overpass, restricting the use of harmful pesticides,
preserving Tilden Park's Merry-Go-Round and encouraging the
proliferation of butterflies in an urban environment-to name a few!
Shirley Dean has publicly stated her strong opposition to building a
gambling casino on Point Molate, housing on toxic contaminated ground
on the Richmond shoreline and the proposed mega shopping mall on
Golden Gate Fields. Shirley Dean has proven to be a hard-worker,
well-prepared on the issues, and someone who will actually meet with
community groups and individuals, take phone calls and actually
listen to what they have to say! Her program is one of balance
between preserving the natural environment and providing recreation
opportunities.
