SIGNATURE GATHERING
Please join us this Saturday 3/25 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at 1604
Solano Avenue (Law Office of Robert Cheasty) in Albany to continue
to collect signatures on the Albany Shoreline Protection
Initiative. Marge Atkinson, Co-Chair of the Citizens for the Albany
Shoreline, will be there with others to hand out materials to walk a
precinct.
We need volunteers to continue the excellent effort we started last
weekend. Albany voters are warmly receiving our message and
signing. But time is limited and we only have a few more weeks to
gather enough signatures to qualify for the November, 2006, ballot.
ALBANY SHORELINE PROTECTION INITIATIVE
Please see our website for details. Basically, the initiative would
put a moratorium on waterfront development for two years while the
City Council and environmental stakeholders select a Task Force to
create a Specific Plan for the entire waterfront. If passed, the
initiative would create an additional 500 foot setback from the
shoreline and provide any future owner with guidelines for the
remaining portion in the event the racetrack closes.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING 3/20
What to do about the waterfront now that the initiative is in play?
Councilmember Robert Lieber was verbally attacked by the pro-
developers from the Waterfront Coalition for again suggesting a
moratorium while the city sponsors a community planning process for
the entire waterfront. Robert Cheasty, Norman LaForce, Mara Duncan,
and I spoke out in support of the initiative and a community
planning process.
One Councilmember seemed to condone the verbal attacks on Mr Lieber,
because negative things supposedly had been said against her during
the last campaign! That is a surprise, because the campaigns that
CAS endorsed assumed from the get-go that she would be re-elected.
CARUSO AGAINST CITY-SPONSORED COMMUNITY PLANNING
Mr Matt Middlebrook, VP of Caruso Affiliated, stood up to oppose any
City-sponsored community planning process. Instead, he will
continue to sponsor coffees in the homes of his supporters, for
which Caruso telemarketers reportedly continue to aggressively call
residents to attend.
Mrs Sally Outis, who is hosting such a Caruso coffee, spoke directly
into the camera about a neighbor from Curtis Street leaving
a "threatening" message on her machine, which when repeated by Mrs
Outis, really didn't seem all that threatening; rather, while we
don't condone such behavior, the caller expressed disappointment
that the Outises were hosting a coffee in support of the Caruso mall
and Racino Casino.
WATERFRONT COALITION = PRO-DEVELOPERS
The pro-developers in the Waterfront Coalition assert that they
haven't made up their minds yet on the Caruso mall and Racino Casino
proposal. If that is so, why then do they host Caruso-sponsored
coffees and so vociferously oppose the initiative and its
proponents? Judge for yourself by watching the recorded proceedings
on public access channel 33.
