I forgot to mention what I was really doing (outside of day job).
I'm developing a Wiki[1] that runs as a desktop application called
Pepys[2]. I've been using Wikis for a number of years and they've been
very successful in promoting collaboration within teams. At Calaba the
tech team adopted the Wiki really quickly and the quality and
relevance of our documentation improved immensely. Getting the
commercial team involved was a different matter. They could see the
value of it but never got to grips with having to learn a markup
language, even one as simple as WikiMarkup[3]. Thus, the commercial
documents remained in Word and PowerPoint.
Pepys is designed to make using a Wiki as easy as using Word or
PowerPoint. There's no setup required - just start typing and things
that look like WikiNames become hyperlinks. Click on a link to create
that page and carry on typing. The user doesn't have to learn any more
than that.
The current version has basic functionality - bold, italic,
pre-defined styles etc. All the pages are stored as XHTML on disk. It
works well as a single-user wiki. The next challenge is to build in
peer synchronisation of the pages so as to enable a proper
collaborative environment.
