SAVING MONEY THE OLD FASHIONED WAY
http://www.mechanicalbanks.org

The Mechanical Bank Collectors of America maintain a working and
up-to-date site which both informs the public about the antique
treasures they collect and keeps their members up to date on happenings
within the hobby.   Cast iron mechanical banks, which trace their
history into the early 19th century, are thoroughly explored on this
site, by way of references to numerous articles which have been
published on the subject, from all the way back into the 1930s. The
society has managed to save and catalog every article they can find
about the banks and reprint them on their website under the heading
"Scrapbook." It's fascinating! Additionally, there is a section entitled
"Animations" where one can actually watch the movement of selected
banks. The illustrations on the site are all clear and navigation is
easy. There is a "members only" section, but basically it merely
contains "Search" and "Chat" mechanisms. The rest of the site, including
reams of interesting information about mechanical banks, is open to the
public and worth a look.

YOU'LL NEVER GET LOST AGAIN!
http://www.roadmaps.org

We wonder if map collectors ever lose their bearings. When you see their
official site, and particularly their Master List of all official maps
ever drawn for the U.S. and Canada, you will be overwhelmed and
impressed by the body of work that went into cataloging and managing
such a large volume of information. The site also links up with all
kinds of sources for map information, including dealer lists and
upcoming events in the map-collecting world. So, those with a liking for
historic and vintage maps would do well to chart a course to this site
and lose themselves in the abundant information therein.

1975, this site will take you back there.

CRACKLE GLASS IS POPULAR COLLECTIBLE
by Stan Weitman [scra-@systec.com]
http://www.crackleglass.com

Glass is the third most popular collectible in the world. We feel
Crackle Glass is the most beautiful. Crackle Glass is known by other
names, such as Craquelle Glass, Ice Glass and Overshot Glass. It was the
Venetian glass makers of the 16th Century who invented this process.
Even though there are many different processes, basically, the glass is
immersed into cold water while it is molten, thereby cracking the glass.
It was then reheated to seal the cracks, and either molded or hand blown
into the desired shape.

Glass makers from the 19th Century and even today are still using the
same methods. Crackle Glass was reborn in the mid 1850's as glass makers
often used this process to cover up defects in their work. If there were
cordings or striations in the glass (defects), they would crackle it.

Crackle Glass comes in a tremendous variety of shapes, styles and
colors. It was made by the common glass makers and the best glass
makers, such as Galle, Steuben, Moser, Loetz, Stevens & Williams, Webb,
etc. Collectors, who start collecting crackle glass, often start by
purchasing the miniatures. Theses items are usually 3" to 5" tall. They
will fit on any window shelf, and when the sun hits them, they sparkle
beautifully. Before our first book came out, crackle glass was
obtainable anywhere--garage sales, flea markets, and the prices for the
miniatures were under a dollar or two. Now these miniatures sell
anywhere from 15.00 to 50.00, and the more expensive pieces, selling for
over $1,000.

The best thing about collecting crackle glass, is that it's one glass
that has not been widely reproduced. There are only a few companies
making it today, and there are some imports from China, Taiwan, and
other countries, but the experienced collector can tell these apart from
the old pieces.

Editor's note: Stan & Arlene Weitman authored two books on Crackle
Glass: "Crackle Glass Identification & Value Guide" (October, 1995) and
"Crackle Glass Identification & Value Guide" Book II (October, 1997).
Visit their website for information about getting authographed copies of
the books and to view their extensive collection.

WARHOL: MORE THAN 15 MINUTES OF FAME
http://www.clpgh.org/warhol/tour/index.html

The Andy Warhol Museum, which exists in the "real world" in Pittsburgh,
PA, sponsors a website which is as exciting and colorful as a Warhol
painting itself! Sites such as this make us extraordinarily grateful for
the development of the Internet, because now even those who live
thousands of miles from Pittsburgh can view Warhol's masterpieces and be
given explanations of the works which are nearly as comprehensive as
those one would receive from a guided tour of the museum itself. The
virtual museum is arranged floor-by-floor, to replicate the layout of
the actual museum, and representative works by Warhol are shown and
explained on each floor. The images on the site, which are from every
phase of Warhol's career, are bright and striking. The text is extremely
informative. Should one be inspired to visit the actual museum, times
and dates of exhibitions are given as well.

Lovers of vintage automobiles will find this site, maintained by the
Society of Automotive Historians, to be a wonderful clearinghouse for
information about their hobby. With interest in old vehicles growing by
leaps and bounds, the site serves the hobbyist by offering not only
factual history of this form of transportation, but also a place to buy
and sell old cars, parts, vehicle literature and advertising, and other
car-related memorabilia. Additionally, there is a photo gallery
featuring some very snazzy old autos and some fascinating reproductions
of car advertising pieces from the past. A chat room and a faithfully
updated listing of upcoming events completes the well-rounded site.
