HALLOWEEN HAUNTINGS
http://www.salemwitchmuseum.com
Here's an idea for some Halloween fun! If you're in the neighborhood,
visit the Witch Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. If you're not in New
England, or if you prefer to stay home and hand out candy to the little
ghosts and goblins, then just log on to their site and learn "virtually"
everything you ever wanted to know about witches, the 1692 Salem trials,
and the evolving attitude toward witches, warlocks, and witchcraft since
those paranoid days. Did you know, for example, that both men and women
were tried in Salem for witchcraft activities? Learn about that and all
the rest of the spooky facts at the site, which also provides directions
to the museum and an online gift shop.

WHO ARE THE ALADDIN KNIGHTS?
http://www.aladdinknights.org/kerosene_mantle_lamps.php
The Aladdin Knights are members of a group of collectors of antique
Aladdin coal-oil (kerosene) and electric lamps. They are dedicated to
the advancement of collecting and preserving Aladdin lamps and
memorabilia. The Aladdin Lamp was first introduced in 1908 and the
company survives today, producing technologically-updated mantle lamps
that burn brighter than ever before. Meanwhile, collectors of the old
kerosene and electric lamps maintain a comprehensive and informative
website, hold yearly conventions, and produce a newsletter filled with
interesting facts about the history of lighting.

MAY I SEE YOUR LICENSE?
http://www.worldlicenseplates.com
If you have an interest in automobilia and lots of time on your hands,
visit "License Plates of the World", Michael Kustermann's amazingly
comprehensive website devoted to international and domestic auto tags.
Hundreds of countries are represented (some you may never have heard
of), as well as every state in the U.S. Both current license plates and
historic ones are pictured on each page in incredible abundance. Even
all existing diplomatic plates and Indian tribal plates are shown.
Kustermann's collection is indeed vast! The plates are not just
pictured, but in most cases are explained in detail.

'EASY RIDER' MEMORABILIA TO BE AUCTIONED
http://tinyurl.com/yqqhk7
Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas will auction memorabilia from the
film "Easy Rider," actor Peter Fonda's cult classic from 1969. Included
in the October 6 auction will be the American flag taken from the back
of the jacket Fonda wore throughout the film, a Department of Defense
pin that adorned the jacket, Fonda's gold record for the film's
soundtrack album and his collection of six movie posters. The flag alone
has an estimated value of $50,000.

DEAD, GONE & OBSOLETE COMPUTERS MUSEUM
http://www.old-computers.com/news/default.asp
Our initiation into the world of computing was with an Apple IIe in the
80's. Wow, it was magic. Depending on your age, you'll probably remember
Commodore, Atari and the Lisa. At this virtual museum, you'll see where
we've been in the evolution of computers. There are now 974 computers in
the museum. Antiques--not yet but they are becoming increasingly
collectible.

CARS WE DROVE
http://objflicks.com/CarsWeDrove.htm
Here is a great montage of the cars of the 50s & 60s and where we went.
If you're not old enough to remember, we think you'll still get a kick
out of the memories presented here.

A STEAMY SUBJECT
http://www.steam-era.com/index.html
This Canadian-based website devoted to steam engines of every type and
description is loaded with information about the venerable
smoke-and-steam-chugging machines that helped shape the nations of
Canada and the United States in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The site contains a good bit of information posted by the site's parent,
the Ontario Steam & Antique Preservers Association. Those who are
interested in steam tractor engines will be particularly delighted by
the amount of information found, and there are scads of tractor pictures
for those who are aficionados of the topic.

TREASURES FROM THE LOUVRE IN DENVER
http://exhibits.denverartmuseum.org/artisansandkings
An October exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, "Artisan & Kings,
Selected Treasures From the Louvre," includes more than 125 paintings,
sculptures and decorative arts collected by the Sun King, Louis XIV, and
his two successors, as well as works seized after the French Revolution
or later by Napoleon. It will be the first time the Louvre works have
ever traveled to the western states.

THE PAYPHONE PROJECT
http://www.payphone-project.com
From Antarctica to Vietnamese markets, from Paris Starbucks to the
basement of the Vatican, there isn't a spot where a pay phone is not. Or
so it used to be. Since 1995, The Payphone Project has been documenting
the world's colorful collection of booths, and generally extolling the
character of that humble servant of the common space, the public pay
phone. And though the curator behind this project claims no worries
about the future of the hardest-working instrument in
telecommunications, the site's news section reads like a chronicle of an
endangered species. For that very reason, a trip through the project's
picture gallery is in order. Tour the stylish designs of Milan, mourn
over a cemetery pay phone in Queens NYC and gawk at the phones in Costa
Rica.

SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL DEBUTS
http://www.smithsonianchannel.com
The Smithsonian Institution launched its new television unit, The
Smithsonian Channel, last month on DirecTV (soon to be provided with
other carriers) in competition with National Geographic and the
Discovery Channel. Actors Morgan Freeman and Tom Cavanagh host the
signature series, "Stories from the Vaults," from the back rooms of the
world's largest museum and research complex. At the new website you can
view videos on varied topics such as: dolls, zeppelins, legendary coins,
how the museum protects its treasures, world's finest cars, ultimate
weapons, and much more. The TV unit was created in part to boost revenue
for the nonprofit Smithsonian, which is facing a $2.5 billion backlog in
maintenance of its museums on the National Mall.
