Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 12, Number 6
November 1, 2007

We're back from a driving trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut to visit
friends. Although a bit disappointed to find the fall foliage not yet at
peak, one still cannot underestimate the beauty of the scenery in New
England. A highlight of the trip was a tour of the local cranberry
industry in Mass., including a visit to a cranberry bog and processing
plant. At the bog, our guide provided an antique harvesting scoop which
enabled us to harvest two big bags of cranberries to bring home.

See some photos from our cranberry adventure:

We've updated the feature article section of our website and added new
articles on American Indian Pottery, collecting bookmarks, collecting
postcards, collecting business cards and more. Take a look:

MUSIC: A THING OF BEAUTY
http://www.usd.edu/smm/collect.html

Located on the campus of the University of South Dakota, the National
Music Museum is not only a repository of more than 13,500 American,
European and non-western instruments from all cultures and historical
periods, it also contains an extensive library of books, photos, sound
recordings and other memorabilia. Take a look around the website and see
examples of unique instruments including bowed, brass, electronic, reed,
keyboard, percussion, stringed, woodwind and more. Have you ever seen a
harmonica with bells? You'll find a photo of one here.

CIRCUS MUSEUM
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/circusworld

Ringling Brothers got its start in Baraboo, Wisconsin and that is where
the Circus World Museum is located. Visitors enter the museum to the
sound of circus music and see such sights as vintage wagons and posters
advertising attractions such as Gargantua, the giant gorilla. Outside
the museum are original Ringling-built buildings and the Hippodrome
where circus acts perform during the summer. There are elephants and
camels to ride, popcorn and cotton candy to eat, photos and costumes of
famous clowns and performers, and an interactive circus where children
can be a part of the show.

B-MOVIE GUIDE
http://www.badmovies.org

Self-described as "A website to the detriment of good film," this
website offers a safe place to indulge in your more unsavory cinematic
tastes. Badmovies.org is a review website dedicated to grade "B" and
below movies. Run to this handy B-movie guide to find out how to stop
the giant man-eating grasshoppers who are attacking Chicago! Get ratings
and guides on everything cheesy.

ANTIQUE CORSETS
http://antiquecorsetgallery.com

The Antique Corset Gallery presents a tour through 250 years of rigid
undergarments that kept the ladies' waists slim and put the "girls"
right where the gents could see them. The gallery explores the shape,
fabric, color, construction and evolution of undergarments from the
1700's to the early 20th Century. At this site you can click on images
of corsets to get a larger image, along with details and a history of
the individual corsetry and under supports shown.

'THE LAST SUPPER' TRAVELS THE INTERNET
http://www.haltadefinizione.com/en/

Last Saturday, a high def image of Leonardo Da Vinci's 15th century
masterpiece "The Last Supper" went online at 16 billion pixels (1,600
times stronger than the images taken with the typical 10 million pixel
digital camera). You can look at details as though you were inches from
the art work, in contrast to regular photographs, which become grainy as
you zoom in.

GROOVY CANDIES
http://www.groovycandies.com

The owners of this website absolutely love candy! Through research, they
discovered enough old candies that still exist to put together a
collection of the best Baby Boomer candy. Visit the site to reminisce
and even order such candies as: Bit O Honey, Candy Lipstick, Lik-m-Aid,
Blackjack Gum, Jujubes, Bubble Gum Cigarettes, Slo Poke Suckers, Hot
Cinnamon Toothpicks, Necco Wafers, SenSen, Pop Rocks, Wax Lips, etc.
Check the "retro" section and bring back memories!

SELLING COLLECTIBLES WITH VIDEO
http://tinyurl.com/2r3qd2

We have recently noticed a slight increase in folks using video inserted
in their eBay listing descriptions. Ina Steiner discusses this
multimedia concept in a recent blog entry.

STRIKING RELICS
http://www.crecon.com/vintagevegas/matches.htm

What's the best little souvenir from Las Vegas? Matchbooks, of course.
Take a stroll down the Vegas Strip and look at casinos gone by with the
help of relics carefully catalogued on this site. These free mementos
will remind you of the Tropicana and its spectacular Follies Bergere or
the excitement and luxury of the Riviera. Relive the Old West at the
Boulder Club or indulge in tiki chic at Castaways. These matchbooks
aren't for sale and are offered strictly for viewing enjoyment.
