Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 12, Number 8
February 1, 2008

We're back! We survived a giant ice storm -- no power for six days and
tree damage left a lot of debris throughout our city. It's taken awhile
to clean up and get back to thinking about the far more pleasant subject
of collectibles, but here we are! Hard to believe it's already the
second month of the new year. February is the shortest month and the
only month with fewer than 30 days. For such a short month, there is a
lot happening: Groundhog Day, The Super Bowl, St. Valentine's Day,
President's Day, Black History Month, Laurel's birthday, Westminster Dog
Show, Mardi Gras, etc. So how do you pronounce February? FEB-yoo-air-ee
or FEB-roo-uh-ree? Actually, I think I use a combination of both:
FEB-roo-air-eee. Dictionary.com says feb-roo-er-ee. But then again,
who cares? HA!

As long time collectors of McCoy Pottery, we're now overwhelmed with the
quantity of pottery we have. In order to downsize a bit, we're selling
some of our pottery. Visit the following link and take a look:

LEAPING INTO 2008
http://tinyurl.com/2ff793

This year is a Leap Year, meaning that February has an extra day and men
tend to get nervous about being pursued by women. However, during the
Middle Ages, if a woman intended to propose to a man in a Leap Year, she
had to give him some warning by allowing a red petticoat show beneath
her dress. According to superstition, Leap Year is an excellent time for
beginning an important business venture, although superstition says it
is extremely bad luck to be married during Leap Year. Among others,
Jimmy Dorsey and Dinah Shore were "leaplings", born on Feb. 29. Postcard
collectors value Leap Year postcards, and some of them are quite pricey
and desirable. During the Golden Age of Postcards, which occurred just
after the turn of the 20th century, sets of Leap Year postcards were
created by numerous publishers. Many survive today and are colorful and
playful additions to collections. Check the above website for some
examples.

MINIATURE MOBILE MASTERPIECES

Boston's Museum of Fine Arts offers image downloads of works by artists
such as Claude Monet and Edward Hopper for cell phones and other mobile
devices. Users also can see Japanese postcards and other works not often
displayed in exhibit halls because of sensitivity to light. Among the
museum's 50 current offerings are John Singer Sargent's "The Daughters
of Edward Darley Boit," 1882; "George Washington," by Gilbert Stuart,
American, 1796; "Lighthouse and Buildings, Portland Head, Cape
Elizabeth, Maine," 1927, by Edward Hopper and Pierre-Auguste Renoir's
"Dance at Bougival, 1883. A single wallpaper costs $1.99.

ART DECO WAYS

Modern day South Beach in Miami, Florida is still a vibrant monument to
the designs of the late 1920s and '30s. The narrow streets are lined
with hotels and buildings designed with curved edges, porthole windows
and pastel-colored facades, all touchstones of the style. Visit the
above website to view examples of the three predominate architectural
styles found in the Art Deco District of South Beach: Mediterranean
Revival, Streamline Moderne and MiMo Style (Post World War II).

Tulsa is one of America's ten top showcase cities for art deco
architecture. Only Miami and NYC claim more examples of the
architectural craftsmanship of the 20s & 30s. The sixth World Congress
of Art Deco was held in Tulsa in 2001. The Art Deco Society of Montreal,
Canada will host the 2009 Congress.

A LICENSE TO MAIL
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/stamps

Last month Britain's Royal Mail issued a set of stamps commemorating
James Bond, the fictional super-spy, to mark 100 years since the birth
of his creator, Ian Fleming. The six stamps feature the original cover
artwork of Bond thrillers including "Dr. No,""Goldfinger,""Diamonds Are
Forever" and "From Russia With Love." They come in a variety of
denominations for both domestic and overseas use. A James Bond
exhibition is due to open at London's Imperial War Museum in April, and
novelist Sebastian Faulks has written an official new 007 adventure,
"Devil May Care," to be published May 28 - Fleming's 100th birthday.

SWEET INSPIRATION
http://www.necco.com

Each February since we began this newsletter, we have reported on a
phenomenon which, although certainly not urgent or even particularly
important, is bit of a barometer of what's of interest to the public in
that particular year. We are talking about the "messages" that appear on
the Necco Conversation Hearts which appear in stores each Valentine's
Day. Some of the messages are repeated year after year on the tiny candy
hearts, but Necco chooses several new ones each year, too. For example,
during the years when computer technology was coming of age, messages
such as "Fax Me" and "Email Me" were added. In 2005, new messages were
all fitness or sports oriented, such as "Fit for Love" and "Dream Team".
This year, Necco introduced ten new sayings that are weather-related,
undoubtedly spurred by all the unique weather conditions our country has
experienced in the past few years. "Cloud Nine" and "Heat Wave" are
examples. Eight billion hearts are manufactured and sold each year
during the six weeks between January 1 and Valentine's Day. So, if your
sweetheart gives you a box of hearts, be sure to read before you munch.

MEET THE OSCARS
http://www.oscar.com

Although at this time, because of the striking writers, it is unclear if
the 80th Academy Awards Ceremony will take place on February 24. But all
this month visitors to the Hollywood & Highland Center in LA will be
able to view and photograph the actual golden statuettes to be awarded.
Another set of 50 statuettes will be on display from February 15-23 at
Times Square Studios in NYC. Each eight-and-a-half pound Oscar stands
13-inches tall and is made of gold-plated britannium, a metal alloy.

Oscar Trivia:
How Oscar received his nickname is not exactly clear. The most popular
story is that Margaret Herrick, an Academy librarian and eventual
executive director, remarked that the statuette resembled her Uncle
Oscar, and the Academy staff began to refer to it as Oscar. Although the
nickname was used with increasing frequency during the late 1930s, the
Academy didn't officially use the name Oscar until 1939.

JUST FOR FUN
http://www.badgiftemporium.com

With Valentine's Day two weeks away, you might take a peek at some of
these before selecting a gift for your honey. This website is devoted to
the worst presents people have received, from a statue of an angel
sitting on a hamburger to a rock star Furby to homemade pickled hotdogs
to just cheesy tchotchkes. It's worth a chuckle just to see the photos
and read the descriptions.
