Ah, it's May Day! Although we're not actually dancing around a maypole
today, we are happy that this time of year marks the end of a most
uncomfortable winter. On our part of the planet we suffered through lots
of cold winter nights and a most significant ice storm last December.
Alas, daylight has rapidly increased and the warming of spring has
caused new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name.
Among many other holidays this month, Mother's Day in the U.S. falls on
the second Sunday of each May. There’s still time to surprise Mom with
the perfect gift on Sunday, May 11. From traditional gifts like jewelry
and flowers to unusual picks like electronics and software, check out
the following link for ideas from our friends at Amazon.com:

BLAST TO THE PAST
http://parkforesthistory.org
If you have fond memories of Formica tabletops, rotary dial phones,
Russell Wright, Fiesta Ware, aluminum tumblers, galoshes, and
vinyl-and-chrome chairs, step through the door of the Park Forest House
Museum. In an original rental townhome, the museum is full of furniture
and household items common to homes from 1948-1953. Park Forest, 40
miles south of Chicago, was America's first fully-planned, post World
War II suburb. Often know as "GI Town", it was created in order to house
returning Veterans of World War II. Don't miss the museum's virtual tour
of the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living room and more.

THE WORLD OF COLLECTING

What's the deal with collecting? Why do so many go so batty over stamps,
coins, garden gnomes, and just about anything else? "Amass Appeal" is an
article from a recent AARP magazine which details one collector, his
passion and how he was attracted to to the world of collecting.

TOY SPACE GUNS

Flash Gordon never would have dreamed of going anywhere without his
trusty ray gun and, back in the day, few of his young fans ventured far
from their toy blasters, either. In the photo gallery, view an
impressive array of toy lasers, perfectly packaged with fonts and
graphics guaranteed to rekindle that nostalgic love of otherworldly
weapons.

WEATHER VANE COLLECTORS

This article from Country Living magazine discusses that wonderful
example of functional folk art, the weather vane. Accompanied by
provocative and nostalgic photos of some beautiful vanes, the text
delves into the history of weather vanes, their use throughout the ages,
their wide range of design and functionality, and a great deal of useful
information for the collecting, care, and display of them. Check the
photo gallery to see the beauty and simplicity of these examples of the
perfect marriage of form and function.

CRAYOLA 64 TURNS THE BIG 5-0
http://tinyurl.com/4yytve
An American cultural icon, the Crayola 64 Box turns 50 this year. Since
debuting in 1958 on an episode of the "Captain Kangaroo Show," more than
200 million boxes have been sold, totaling some 12.8 billion crayons.
That many crayons could circle the earth 24 times. A Yale University
study found that the smell of a fresh box of crayons is among the 20
most recognizable scents to American adults.

EBAY BOYCOTT

Soon, eBay sellers will no longer be able to leave buyers negative or
neutral feedback. The most radical change to the feedback system since
eBay founder Pierre Omidyar launched it, the change is scheduled to
start rolling out the week of May 19. Many sellers don't like it, and a
small but vocal group is calling for a boycott on May 1 to protest the
change. Read this complete article by Ina Steiner at the above link.

ABANDONED SHOPPING CARTS
http://tinyurl.com/yjlv66
Like many major cities, Los Angeles doesn't like it when shopping carts
are discarded on its streets—and it's passed legislation forbidding it.
Now, photographer Morgan Hager takes to the sidewalks, ravines, and
fields of the City of Angels to document the outlaw carts in the wild.
Here, various carts nose up to garbage cans, linger under a tree, or
park beneath a "No Parking" sign.
