Happy 132nd birthday, America! Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
U.S. Flag Etiquette & Standards of Respect:
http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html
We've all heard many versions of The Star Spangled Banner, but I ran
across this one and thought I'd share. From Lubbock, TX five young girls
called the Cactus Cuties sing before 11,000 people.

Many of you know that I'm a fan of The Mother Road and love all things
Route 66. In fact, I just returned from a national Route 66 festival in
Litchfield, Illinois. I've put together a little store of Route 66
t-shirts and other things at this website:

The National Constitution Center is an independent, non-partisan, and
non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public understanding of,
and appreciation for, the Constitution, its history, and its
contemporary relevance.

JULY 1942: UNITED WE STAND
http://americanhistory.si.edu/1942/introduction.html
In an unprecedented display of national unity, more than 500 American
magazines featured the American flag on their July 1942 covers to show
support for the ongoing war and celebrate the country's birthday. The
National Museum of American History allows you to peruse their online
virtual exhibit of covers. For more information about the artists and
designers who created the patriotic and stylish magazine covers, look
behind the designs.

WORLD'S LONGEST YARDSALE
http://www.127sale.com
The 21st Annual "World's Longest Yardsale" will be August 7-10. The
four-day sale begins at Defiance, OH, and runs south to Chattanooga, TN,
then switches to the Lookout Mountain Parkway, continuing to Gadsden,
AL. Visitors can travel more than 450-miles of scenic beauty and hunt
for the unusual and enjoy the unexpected. The original idea was to bring
travelers from the busy Interstate system to the less traveled highways
of Tennessee and Kentucky. The event has grown every year since its
modest beginning in 1987 when it was called the US 127 Corridor Sale.

VINTAGE TIES
http://tinyurl.com/48dnp3
Neckties that languished in storage bins as businesses went casual, are
coming out of the closet along with suits, and vintage samples are
turning up in stores and at auctions. A search for "vintage tie" on eBay
brought up nearly 3000 items, including accouterments such as tie clips
and tie racks. While many cost less than a new tie, designs by artists
Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso from the 1950s have sold for up to $800.
The most popular vintage ties, however, are what collectors call
"kitsch" and which others call folk art or Americana, often hunting down
specimens from 1944 to 1952. For some necktie history, visit the above
website.

THE AMERICAN PACKAGE MUSEUM
http://www.packagemuseum.com/index.htm
If you're a fan of vintage advertising, here's a great place to view the
old packaging of classic American products, like A& P coffee, Alka
Seltzer, or Wrigley's chewing gum. All images are from the early 20th
century, and there's an alphabetical index.

TO TAIPEI FOR BEAUTY
http://www.npm.gov.tw/en/home.htm
Taiwan's National Palace Museum is making the world's largest collection
of ancient Chinese art and artifacts available to us in digital format.
The objects are especially well-presented, with music, animation, and
other features deployed to show the works.

ODE TO THE AUTOMOBILE
http://www.tupeloautomuseum.com
The Tupelo Automobile Museum features Frank Spain's collection of more
than 100 restored cars. Spains cars include a rare 1948 Tucker (with a
middle headlight), a 1981 DeLorean, a 1948 Jaguar convertible, and Elvis
Presley's 1976 Lincoln. Spain has been collecting for over 30 years. See
much of his collection at the museum's website.

SAVING MARK TWAIN'S HOME
http://www.marktwainhouse.org
Author Mark Twain built his Hartford, Conn. home in 1870. Unfortunately,
the historic Twain House is going through some financial troubles, and
it could close. The staff running the house & museum has shrunk from 49
to 17, and the New York Times reports it is having trouble meeting
payroll and paying suppliers. A message on the attraction's official
site asks for donations.
