Summer in the city!

Well folks, the Dog Days of Summer are certainly in place here where I
sit. The hottest, most sultry days of the year have arrived, the AC is
straining and predictions are that we'll be in triple digit temps in the
next day or two. The older I get the more the heat and humidity affect
me. Ah well....although I complain, I'm still glad I live in an area
that experiences all four distinct seasons. Each has positive points (my
crepe myrtles love the heat) but personally I'm at a loss for words
right now to find anything good to say about this current heat wave!

In keeping with the theme of this intro, I found a nostalgic video I
hope you enjoy:

NOTE: Later this month we'll be heading north for a little vacation.
After picking up a rental car in Utah, we plan to visit Wyoming,
Montana, Idaho and possibly drive up into the Canadian Rockies. We hope
to enjoy this adventure with cooler temperatures and the spectacular
beauty of nature. Because of the timing of this trip, the newsletter
will take a hiatus in September. Don't look for the next issue until
October 1.

TEMPLE OF THE HOG

Last month Harley-Davidson opened their new museum in downtown
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The museum's 20-acre site will likely become a
temple for Harley owners. It features about 200 bikes and other pieces
of H-D history and culture. The motorcycles include the oldest Harley
(Serial Number One) and Elvis Presley's red and white 1956 Model KH.
Harley-Davidson celebrates its 105th anniversary later this month. Check
out the virtual tour and online exhibits at the above link and see some
classic ads and some great H-D racing photos.

GOING FOR THE GOLD

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games (officially known as the Games of the XXIX
Olympiad) open August 8 in Beijing. As international attention focuses
on the games, interest in Olympics collectibles also increases. Susan
Eberman offers a feature article called "Going for the Gold." Rare and
pricey collectibles are discussed as well as many items and souvenirs
for much smaller budgets.

Ancient Greek "computer" discovered
How did ancient Greeks set the dates for Olympic Games? They used an
intricate “computer" which helped them determine the full moon closest
to the summer solstice.

STOP & YIELD TO THIS SITE
http://www.mycrazyhobby.com

The owner of this site collects street signs, traffic signs, road signs,
traffic lights and signals. He has over 350 of them and defensively
makes it clear that he does not steal the signs. He gets them from flea
markets, antique stores, visiting local street departments and eBay.
Browse through vintage stop signs or examine speed limit placards from
the 1950s. Did you know that yellow stop signs were used until the
1950s?

BUS MUSEUM
http://www.busmuseum.org

A website we were directed to recently asks the question, "Did you know
that the Museum of Bus Transportation has the largest collection of
buses on display under one roof in the US?" We didn't, and on further
perusal of the site, we're glad they asked. The museum, which is a
partner of the Antique Automobile Club of America and is located in
Hershey, PA can put you in touch with just about everything you've ever
wanted to know about the history of the nation's bus industry, types of
buses between 1912 and 1975, bus advertising, and bus memorabilia.
Eleven vintage buses are on display, the most famous being the Forrest
Gump bus. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and would be a
great addition to a trip to see Hershey's many other attractions. Check
the website for directions and hours of operation.

IS IT THE REAL THING OR FAKE?
http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives

Beginning its sixth season this summer, "History Detectives" explores
the stories about the discovery, documentation and preservation of
historic American artifacts, with comments from researchers and
appraisers. You see the experts search out the facts and myths that
connect local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. Each
episode features three segments; a different "mystery" is solved in each
segment. "History Detectives" airs Monday evenings on PBS.

SOUND FROM WAX & TIN
http://www.tinfoil.com

This entertaining and educational site focuses on the very first audio
recording media: tinfoil and wax cylinders. Explore early sound
recording methods, two-minute wax cylinder records and antique
phonographs; see plenty of rare vintage photos; and enjoy listening to
early recorded sounds taken directly from the original wax cylinders.

OBSERVATIONS FROM A ROUTE 66 BUSINESS OWNER

Our friend, Laurel Kane, owns a small private visitors' center, vintage
car museum, and Route 66 memorabilia collection in an old gas station on
Route 66. Her new blog offers a daily reflection of what it's like to
meet and greet Route 66 travelers from all over the world at her Afton
Station.
