Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 13, Number 5
November 1, 2008

My goodness, it's November already! Here in the U.S. the big holiday
this month is Thanksgiving, celebrated at the end of the harvest season
to express thanks for one's material and spiritual possessions. Even
though it's still about four weeks until Thanksgiving Day, it's never to
early to remember the reason for our seasonal celebrations. The
following link is to a good, concise history of Thanksgiving, traveling
back to Plymouth to discover some of the humble origins of Thanksgiving
traditions and taking us from that original celebration to football and
even the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Don't forget that Daylight Saving Time reverts to Standard Time at 2:00
a.m. local time on Sunday. DST is not observed in Hawaii or Arizona,
with the exception of the Navajo Nation, which does observe it, even in
Arizona. More than one billion people in about 70 countries around the
world observe DST in some form. So, reset those clocks and be sure to
check the batteries in your smoke detectors!

OH, and don't forget to vote on Tuesday!

NOT JUST BUTTONS
http://apic.us

The American Political Items Collectors (APIC) is an organization
dedicated to the collection, preservation and study of materials
relating to political campaigns. Historically, the association, and it's
2,500 members, have basically centered on political (particularly
presidential) campaigns of the United States. Today, thanks to the
Internet, communications between collectors around the world has become
commonplace. There are hundreds of collectors of U.S. political
memorabilia who reside in other countries and thousands more who collect
artifacts of campaigns and elections in their own countries.

STATE QUARTER PROGRAM ENDS
http://tinyurl.com/4ctvdg

This month Hawaii becomes the last state to be honored by the U.S.
Mint's 10-year state quarter program. About 34 billion were produced and
reportedly fulfilled the government's goal to ignite interest among
young people in U.S. history, geography and coin collecting. The coins
have also been lucrative for the Mint, bringing in several billion
dollars in profit (the cost to manufacture a quarter is about 5 cents)
and making it the most popular coin program in history. With the end of
the program comes special complete sets of the quarters including
uncirculated collections with a satin finish and silver proofs. Next
year quarters will be issued for the left-out District of Columbia,
commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands, and the
U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

THE END OF AN ERA?

This country's last steam powered stern wheeler is on her last scheduled
cruise. As things stand, the Delta Queen's wonderful career will end
when she reaches New Orleans on November 7.

WHAT - ME WORRY?
http://tinyurl.com/5929y3

Alfred E. Neuman, sporting the grinning face with the flapping ears, has
gazed out from the covers of MAD magazine for half a century. The
magazine is putting a last batch of original drawings of Alfred and
other early works up for auction with the Heritage Auction Galleries in
Dallas and online. The collection is mostly made up of Alfred E. Neuman
covers, including the first one drawn by the late Norman Mingo for MAD's
issue No. 30 of December 1956. It shows the gap-toothed icon as a
"write-in candidate for president," saying "What - me worry?" as an
elephant and donkey glare angrily at each other in the background.

A PUZZLING SITE
http://www.oldpuzzles.com

This site is dedicated to vintage puzzles. Their origins date to the
1760s, when Europeans pasted maps onto wood blocks, then cut them up for
educational purposes. Recreational jigsaw puzzles came into popularity
at the turn of the 20th century, but it wasn't until the Great
Depression that they truly became mass entertainment. The reason? They
were a cheap diversion from the travails of everyday life.

CABBAGE PATCH CANDIDATES
http://tinyurl.com/5zyjb7

Four one-of-a-kind Cabbage Patch Kids dolls crafted in the likeness of
presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain and vice
presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin are at auction on
eBay. The dolls sport outfits inspired by their counterparts, with the
Palin doll wearing the Republican candidate's signature rimless
eyeglasses, red suit and heels. All proceeds from the auction, which
ends Nov. 4, benefits the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

FIGHT THE MOLD

Harmful and threatening mold & mildew on ephemera (written and printed
matter) and other collectible items can be difficult to deal with and
ultimately may leave them virtually worthless. However, infected items
may still be salvageable. Before contacting a professional conservator,
check the steps and tips for basic cleaning and preservation given in
this article from Antique Trader magazine.

DEDICATED TO ROADSIDE ODDITIES
http://www.agilitynut.com/roadside.html

If your favorite thing about a road trip is a visit to something odd and
unusual, you can use "Roadside Architecture" as a resource for your next
vacation. The site is divided into categories such as Paul Bunyans,
Drive-In Theaters, Miniature Villages, and Signs. Each category contains
a large number of examples of the genre. For instance, a whopping
sixteen Paul Bunyan statues are listed and described (with photos) on
the site! Most are in northern states where lumberjacks customarily
thrived, but you'll be surprised about some of the other Bunyan
locations. The category called Giant Containers is broken down into
sections such as Giant Barrels, Giant Coffee Cups and Giant Bottles.
There are also categories covering interesting eateries, motels, gas
stations, and car showrooms. Very little of the weird and wacky is left
out of this fascinating site.

50s FINS AND CHROME
http://tinyurl.com/54zsyt

The U.S. Postal Service makes it possible for classic car lovers to show
their love of a car and an era with its America on the Move series: 50s
Fins and Chrome. The stamps are printed from paintings created by
legendary automobile illustrator Art M. Fitzpatrick of vehicles still on
the road today. Homage is paid to the '57 Chrysler 300C, '57 Lincoln
Premiere, '57 Pontiac Safari, '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk and the tallest
tailfins around -- the '59 Cadillac Eldorado.
