Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 13, Number 6
December 1, 2008
Ron McCoy, editor [ro-@collectingbuzz.com]

Whoa, is it December already? We actually had a few snow flakes today
but nothing major.

The entire newsletter production staff (uh, that's me, myself and I)
would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a happy and
safe holiday season.

Lots of people, including me, will be shopping at AMAZON.COM this
season. (It beats the crowded malls and you've gotta love the free
shipping and delivery right to your door!) If you need a holiday gift
(or maybe just something for yourself), please visit and bookmark the
following link.

By purchasing items through our shopping links, we get a tiny commission
and you will be contributing to the continued service that this
newsletter provides to you free of charge. You can search and order
books, music, buy Amazon gift cards, even groceries from AMAZON.COM. Now
who wouldn't love being gifted with three pounds of India Tree Vanilla
Sugar? :-) And thanks in advance for your support!

NOSTALGIC NOSH!
http://www.retrofoodrecipes.com

This is a great site with a collection of authentic vintage recipes
straight from the little tin recipe box (remember those?). How about
some chestnut soup? Or maybe a batch of homemade mincemeat (don't forget
the whiskey)? Yum, pork with prunes or rabbit stewed in cider? And a
real classic recipe offers an easy way to cook old pigeons. Bon
appetite!

END CARPET CONFUSION
http://www.art-arena.com/pcarpet.htm

Rug collectors probably already know all this stuff. But let's face it,
the rest of us can be easily confused by the complicated and somewhat
arcane world of Oriental carpets. Fortunately this website, which is
part of a wonderful website on Persian History and Culture, has the
answer to every question you might have about Persian rugs. Although it
is so filled with information that sometimes it reads like a textbook,
it's definitely the place to go for serious identification of types,
dates, and other rug particulars. The site is liberally sprinkled with
illustrative photos to differentiate carpets from all the regions of old
Persia. So, if you don't know an Ishfan from a Kerman from a Shiraz,
this is the place for you to begin your quest for carpet knowledge.

A HELMET, A HAT AND A LIGHTSABER

Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from "Star Wars," Indiana Jones' hat and
whip from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and Batman's cowl from
"Batman Begins" will be auctioned Dec. 11 in Calabasas, California. The
lightsaber is expected to sell for at least $150,000. Other items
featured in the auction include C3PO's helmet, a complete set of "Harry
Potter" books signed by J.K. Rowling, a three-volume collection of "The
Lord of the Rings" signed by J.R.R. Tolkien and Arnold Schwarzenegger's
costume from "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

WHEN AIRLINE TRAVEL WAS FUN
http://tinyurl.com/43svta

Packaged together at their site, Travel + Leisure Magazine offers some
vintage airline commercials from the '60s, '70s and '80s — when airplane
travel was new ... and fun. These ads offer a unique museum of aviation
history. Enjoy!

NEW LIFE GIVEN TO LIFE MAG'S PHOTOS
http://images.google.com/hosted/life

Google's site has opened an online photo gallery featuring millions of
images from Life magazine's archives that have never been seen by the
public before. Life's archives include stunning photos from the Civil
War as well as some of the most memorable moments from the 20th century,
including the Zapruder film capturing John F. Kennedy's assassination.
The photos can be printed out for free but Time Warner Inc., Life's
parent company, hopes to make money by selling high-resolution, framed
prints.

HOLE 'N THE ROCK
http://moab-utah.com/holeintherock

Forty-thousand visitors go annually to see this 5,000-square-foot house
carved from a huge sandstone rock 12 miles south of Moab, Utah. It has
14 rooms, including an art studio and lapidary, where co-creator Albert
Christensen once polished his rocks. All that’s missing: Fred, Wilma and
Pebbles.

A PATTERN GLASS REVIVAL
http://collectingbuzz.com/articles/pattern1.html

Widely collected from the 1930's through the 1950's, pattern glass has
maintained a respectable following, though most new pressed glass
collectors since the l960's have been devotees of the glass from the
depression era. For many beginning collectors today, however, there is
no emotional attachment to depression glass and all but the most
pedestrian patterns have become expensive. Observations of more
identified pieces of pattern glass at malls and shops and in trade
journals, plus the general and specific reference books published in the
last several years, would argue a renewed interest among collectors.
(Read the rest of this two-part article on pattern glass at the above
link.)

POINSETTING IT OUT

Poinsettias are poisonous...truth or fiction? Find out at the above link
how snopes.com answers that question. At any rate, enjoy National
Poinsettia Day on December 11!

UNION STATION STILL DRAWS TOURISTS
http://www.unionstationdc.com/history.aspx

For nearly a century and through two world wars, Union Station in
Washington, DC served as a major transportation center. Today, the
100-year-old building is a thriving transportation hub, a shopping mall
and one of Washington's most visited sites. Union Station serves as the
hub for Amtrak's headquarters and executive offices.
