GOBBLES, QUACKS AND MOOS

The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, NY, on the shores of Lake Otsego, is
probably the second-best-known attraction in the town, after the
Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Recreating rural life in the 1840s,
there are more than two dozen authentic buildings on the grounds,
including a weaver, a printer, a pharmacist, a blacksmith, a doctor and
a children's barnyard with animals native to New York. There are also
exhibits of nineteenth-century games and the Cardiff Giant, a giant,
“fossilized” man found buried in a farm in Cardiff, New York in 1869.
The museum is home to the Empire State Carousel, carved and hand-crafted
by volunteer artisans over a 20 year period, celebrating New York
State's history, culture and environment through a full-sized
merry-go-round built on a vintage 1947 36-foot Alan Herschell carousel
mechanism.

KIDDIE RECORDS WEEKLY
http://www.kiddierecords.com

Here’s a site that’s a record collector’s dream. Before video games,
kids indulged in alternative media formats -- like listening to albums.
The mid 1940s to early '50s marked the golden age of children's records
and saw releases such as "Hopalong Cassidy" and "Bugs Bunny in
Storyland," which provided media companies with early cross-platform
entertainment franchises while delighting youngsters. This collection of
transferred 78s includes "Baby Snooks," played by famed comedienne Fanny
Brice, and the controversial "Tales of Uncle Remus." Many of the records
were meant to accompany picture books, which you'll also find here. One
of the most wonderful aspects of this site is its images of old album
covers, which are clear and large.

HISTORIC BRIDGE GIVEAWAY

If you want to move it and preserve it, the state of Oklahoma has a free
bridge for you. The 80-foot-long pony truss bridge will be demolished if
no one wants it. The Cloud Creek Bridge, erected in 1911 by the
Vincennes Bridge Company, is one of the few surviving examples of
polygonal or “curve-top” Warren pony truss design and is eligible for
inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Historic bridges
have been successfully relocated in Oklahoma and other states for
pedestrian or bicycle use in parks, golf courses, and other recreation
areas.

If you think you have a good use for the historic bridge, you can
contact the Oklahoma Department of Transportation:

DEVIL'S ROPE MUSEUM
http://www.barbwiremuseum.com

The Devil's Rope Museum, housed in a converted Sears bra factory in
McLean, TX, focuses on the history of barbed wire, fencing tools, and
ranching heritage from private wire collectors. There is a reference
library with extensive patent information for researchers and educators,
a dust bowl exhibit, salesman samples, warfare wire, and a collection of
road lore with artifacts dedicated to the Texas portion of Historic
Route 66.

THE TEXAS ROUTE 66 MUSEUM
Located in the same complex as The Devils Rope Barbed Wire Museum, the
Texas Route 66 Museum features over 700 eclectic artifacts from the
famous Mother Road. Included are road signs, advertising souvenirs,
tourism history, a giant steer from a defunct Route 66 restaurant, an
abundance of the famous rhyming Burma Shave signs, a replica of a
typical '50s cafe, the huge snake from the Regal Reptile Ranch, and the
Texas Route 66 Hall of Fame.

Great American Group will auction some 93,752 props and antiques from
20th Century Props, one of Hollywood's largest prop shops serving the
television and movie industry. Since feature film production in Los
Angeles has fallen to its lowest level in more than a decade, the
200,000 square foot warehouse will shut its doors because of mounting
business losses. The auction features a number of high profile items
ranging from replicas of landmarks including the Hollywood Sign, Eiffel
Tower, Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, Dr. Evil's desk from the
Austin Powers movies, the rattan sofa from "The Golden Girls," the
futuristic shower Tom Cruise used in "Minority Report" and a chair
Claudette Colbert sat on in the 1934 version of "Cleopatra." Unusual
items include a decontamination suit, Old West stage coach, vintage toy
plane and a Frank Gehry fish sculpture. Industrial, medical and
restaurant/bar items are up for bid as well as furniture by notable
designers including: Charles Eames, Herman Miller, Mis van der Rohe and
Haywood Wakefield.

FRANKOMA STILL PRODUCING POTTERY
http://www.frankoma.com

Affordable dinnerware and serving pieces, mugs, novelties, memorial
figures, Route 66 items, limited editions, commemoratives,
souvenirs--Frankoma Pottery has served the needs of everyday life since
it's beginnings in 1933. This practical earthenware, known for its terra
cotta look and colorful glazing, has gradually taken its place in the
realm of serious collectibles. In July Frankoma announced a couple of
new pieces. This year’s annual collectors plate was designed by Joniece
Frank, daughter of Frankoma’s founder, John Frank. The theme of the
plate is “A Miracle in God’s Hands” and shows the infant Jesus in God’s
hands. Frankoma has released its first new nativity piece in several
years. The nativity set was started in 2002 and the set grew to 15
pieces by 2004. This year, a shepherd is added.
