Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 14, Number 4
September 1, 2009

Thirty days has September,
All the rest I can't remember,
Why bother with this rhyme at all,
Just look at the calendar on the wall.
In our part of the planet, September signals the early beginnings of
autumn. The heat of another summer begins to wane and we begin to
visualize the coming fall foliage when the leaves turn lovely shades of
orange and red. We really appreciate being in an area that gives us four
distinct seasons.
This week brings summer's last hurrah with a three-day weekend and a
federal holiday celebrating Labor Day. Although over the years it has
evolved into a "last fling of summer" with food and fun, the purpose of
Labor Day in the United States remains the same as when it began over
100 years ago -- a day that affirms the dignity and honor of working
people everywhere.

http://www.smithsonian.com/museumday
The 5th annual Smithsonian magazine's National Museum Day is Saturday,
September 26. Hundreds of museums and cultural venues in the U.S.,
including 84 Smithsonian affiliates, will open their doors and wave
general admission fees. At the Smithsonian website you can download and

HOG HEAVEN
http://route66vintageiron.com
In a small Oklahoma town you'll find a pure slice of Americana. The
Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum, a stopover on Route 66, is located on
Main Street in downtown Miami. This free museum features more than 25
vintage motorcycles including a 1919 Indian Daytona Board Track Racer, a
pre-1920 Harley Davidson and a 1919 Australian GCS motorcycle, the only
one left in existence. It is also home to one of the largest Steve
McQueen memorabilia collections in the world, including his world famous
racing Husqvarna motorcycle and his personal racing trophies.

BEST FLEA MARKETS
http://tinyurl.com/topfleamarkets
Budget Travel Magazine has published their selection of the top five
flea markets in the United States. Their picks include flea markets in
Brimfield, Mass., Springfield, Ohio, Brooklyn, New York, Alameda, Calif.
and the 127 Corridor Sale (Ohio & Alabama). For information about these
markets, refer to the article at the above link.

MONA LISA GETS ANIMATED
http://tinyurl.com/talkingmona
Leonardo da Vinci's painting of Mona Lisa has been brought to life in
China using cutting edge technology. At Beijing's Planning Exhibition
Hall, Mona Lisa can wave, smile and even answer questions from curious
visitors. The Last Supper, another da Vinci masterpiece, has also been
reworked at the exhibition. Every character, from Jesus to his twelve
apostles, talks and eats. See Mona talk at the above link.

WHAT'S WATT?
http://www.wattcollectors.com
This recently updated site for Watt Pottery contains great content for
the avid (as well as novice) collector. The non-profit community is
dedicated solely to the identification and preservation of Watt Pottery.
Features include a mold finder, a mold number identification, a pattern
finder and market values for over 2,600 pieces.

NEON MUSEUM
http://www.neonmuseum.org/fremont-street-gallery.html
The nonprofit Neon Museum rescues, repairs and exhibits classic neon
signs from the Las Vegas skyline. Much of the collection is inaccessible
to the public, but 10 classic refurbished vintage signs can be visited
24 hours a day on a self-guided walking tour in an outdoor downtown
“gallery” near Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard. The signs include
the 1960s Hacienda Horse and Rider, the original 1966 Aladdin’s Lamp
sign and the 1960 Red Barn sign that was saved from a bar of the same
name that burned to the ground.

OLDEST BIBLE DIGITIZED
http://www.codexsinaiticus.org/en
The surviving pages of the world's oldest Bible, known as the Codex
Sinaiticus, have been digitally reunited. The early handwritten work,
comprising just over 400 large leaves of prepared animal skin, has been
housed in four separate locations across the world for more than 150
years. An international collaboration of scholars has recently
digitalized pages and fragments of the 4th-century manuscript. Viewing
is available at the above website.

MAD FAN SELLS ARCHIE COMIC
http://www.archiecomics.com
When comic book store owner Dave Luebke heard that after 67 years, the
carrot-top of the comic world, Archie, was proposing to rich girl
Veronica instead of girl-next-door Betty, he decided to protest by
selling his copy of the series' rare first issue. Dallas' Heritage
Auction Galleries sold his Archie Comics No. 1 for $38,837 last month.
Luebke said people all over the world are reacting to Archie's choice
and mostly everyone feels bad for Betty.
