Antiques & Collecting Newsletter
Volume 14, Number 5
October 1, 2009
Ron McCoy, editor [ro-@collectingbuzz.com]
http://collectingbuzz.com

Well, here it is October and we're still waiting on that colorful fall
foliage to kick in. Just today we noticed some yellowing of a few leaves
but the experts say to wait a couple of weeks before the true beauty
explodes. At least the air has turned cool and crisp.

One of our readers, Madonna Dries Christensen, wrote me recently and
informed me that October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. She also told
me about a new book she's written called "Dolls Remembered." Sixty
contributors reminisce about their childhood dolls and the roles dolls
have played--even in ancient times. All royalties from the book go to
the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia, in honor of her
five-year-old granddaughter, Sarah. You can read about this anthology
and see a picture of Sarah at the following website. While there,
explore some more of Madonna's site, On Worlud Pond.

FULL STEAM AHEAD

With the era of steamboats much too quickly coming to a close, we can be
grateful for the Howard Steamboat Museum on the Ohio River in
Jeffersonville, Indiana. The museum, and the very informative website,
are named for James Howard, who started a shipyard in 1834. Howard
Steamship Co. is gone now, but the site is still occupied by Jeffboats,
which continues the tradition of making river transportation. Whether
you are personally familiar with steamboats or have only seen them in
movies such as "Gone With The Wind" or "Steamboat Round The Bend", this
website will take you to a time when life was slower, speedboats were
unknown, and the slap of a paddle wheel could be heard on many a
riverbank. The site is a perfect combination of nostalgia and
interesting facts about this dying transportation method. It's also a
nice place to buy some beautiful posters, prints, and books about
steamboatin'.

MORE LIFE FROM GOOGLE

As we've mentioned before, thanks to Google, you can search millions of
historic photos from Life magazine from the 1750s to today. Now, decades
of Life magazine have been scanned and posted online, giving the public
the first comprehensive electronic access to the iconic publication's
archives in their original magazine layout. All stories are searchable
and viewable for free.

JULIA CHILD'S KITCHEN
http://americanhistory.si.edu/juliachild

In the new movie "Julie & Julia," Julia Child's kitchen makes only a
brief appearance. But at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
of American History, the famed kitchen of America's most beloved
culinary icon is a star attraction and has been since it was
meticulously reassembled in 2002 after being removed from her home in
Cambridge, Mass.

Trivia: The countertops in Julia's kitchen were made two inches taller
than the standard 36-inch height to accommodate her 6-foot-2-inch frame.

SIGNED LENNON MAGAZINE SOLD

A 1966 magazine signed by John Lennon containing his remark that the
Beatles were more popular than Jesus sold at auction last month in New
Hampshire for $12,713. In the magazine, Lennon said: "Christianity will
go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and
I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now. I don't know
which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity." Lennon signed
"John C. Lennon" above his photo in the September 1966 "Datebook," even
though his middle initial was W. for Winston. His comment provoked much
anti-Beatle sentiment in the United States, where some people burned
their Beatle records.

COLLECTING VINTAGE LABELS
http://tinyurl.com/ycakg9s

Above is a link to a blog with an interesting article about a vintage
label collector who had to build a huge building behind his house to
hold his collection. Labels can be collected by subject, size, graphics,
geographical locations or just what catches your eye. Colorful vintage
labels are great for framing, interior decoration or simply collecting
in albums.

This is an online museum of fruit crate labels from the early 1900s to
1950s. Fruit crates disappeared with the advent of self-service
supermarkets and cardboard boxes, but thousands of vintage labels have
survived in mint condition, rescued from warehouses and print shops. On
this site you can see dozens of different designs and they even offer
high-quality reproductions for sale. You can also read a history of
crate labels.

NEW MUSEUM HONORS WALT DISNEY
http://disney.go.com/disneyatoz/waltdisney

After more than six years of preparation, the Walt Disney Family Museum
opens today in San Francisco. The $110 million museum features a series
of ten galleries designed to walk visitors through Disney's life
chronologically, from his early years on a Missouri farm to his final
triumphs. State-of-the-art exhibits include listening stations and more
than 200 video monitors as well as interactive displays. The museum
consists of three historic buildings that were redesigned and upgraded
and is set in the Presidio, a former Army base with views of the Golden
Gate Bridge. The Disney family chose San Francisco for the museum after
considering Los Angeles, Kansas City or Chicago.

BRITAIN'S QUIRKIEST COLLECTORS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ3GiWuh4Ss

Here is a fun, short video featuring the UKs most unique and unusual
collections of cowboy memorabilia, frogs, banana labels, salt & pepper
shakers, and baked bean labels. These collectors were found in a
nationwide search to star in this short film. Equally notable were
collections that didn't quite make the top five: skulls, butter molds,
antique razors, miniature shoes, post-boxes and not one, but two toilet
paper collectors.

IN-FLIGHT VOMIT RECEPTACLES
http://www.airsicknessbags.com

A few issues ago, we mentioned Collectibles Corner TV, an online video
show for collectors. While perusing the site recently, we discovered
that their latest offering includes an interview with the owner of the
Air Sickness Bag Virtual Museum. Everyone collects something, right?
Steve, the owner of the site says: "One can tell a lot about an
airline's image from their Air Sickness Bags. Some barf bags are no more
than a baggie with a twist tie, while other sickbags could win
international design competitions. Are they art? I think so. You
decide."
