Some personal commitments necessitate sending out the newsletter a
couple of days early. And, since the newsletter is out before Halloween,
the following site might be of interest to you, especially if you carve
jack-o-lanterns. The Pumpkingutter will astound and terrify you with his
creepy pumpkin carvings. If you get inspired, check out the tutorial
with some great pointers for your own pumpkin carvings.

WASHER & DRYER BOUND FOR MUSEUM
http://tinyurl.com/yfearzf

The latch on her pink 52-year-old Maytag dryer was broken so an Oklahoma
woman called Maytag Appliances for help. Rather than a new latch Maytag
offered a brand new washer and dryer to her in exchange for the vintage
appliances so they could be displayed in the Maytag Museum in Benton
Harbor, Michigan. But the old set works so well that Thompson took three
weeks before deciding to accept the offer with a condition — if the new
ones don’t work as well she wants the old set back.

EERIE ABANDONED PLACES

Abandoned man-made structures have captured the imaginations of writers
and photographers for years. The Internet has opened many opportunities
for those folks who love to write about and photograph derelict and
discarded buildings. The article linked above is an interesting read but
also includes a slide show featuring pictures of such places as the
Tugboat Graveyard in New York, a deserted psychiatric hospital in
Norway, a crucifix-topped bell tower in Mexico, a Skunk Line train in
California, some abandoned exurbs in Florida and more.

PEZ MUSEUM
http://www.burlingamepezmuseum.com

The Burlingame Museum of Pez Memorabilia in California is the only place
in the world to see an example of every Pez dispenser ever made. Over
550 unique Pez characters have been produced since 1950 and the museum
has them all displayed behind glass.

Take a video tour of the museum here:

FYI: As the legend goes, French-born software developer Pierre Omidyar
became a billion-dollar global powerhouse after starting off as a place
where Pierre Omidyar's fiancée could sell and buy Pez dispensers. He
started a small auction site, AuctionWeb, and turned it into the billion
dollar enterprise that we now know as eBay. However, many reports have
said that the story about Pez was a corporate myth and fabricated by a
public relations manager in 1997 to interest the media. Regardless, he
did pretty well with his auction site.

PIONEER COUPLE

The Wild West was a place of rugged sensibilities. It was also a time
devoid of modern technology. The pioneers who first lived there had no
electricity nor running water. What would that be like? Well, just ask
the Cains. Visiting Dick and Bonnie Cain is like stepping back into the
1800’s. You’ll find them on their West Texas ranch. They live without
any modern conveniences. They don’t even have any money. And that’s the
way they like it.

WARHOL'S JACKSON PORTRAIT UP FOR AUCTION
http://tinyurl.com/yztxvsp

Christie's auction house in New York is offering a portrait of Michael
Jackson by Andy Warhol on Nov. 10. The 30-by-26-inch portrait should
fetch an estimated $500,000 to $700,000. It's one of a small group of
Warhol silk-screened images of Jackson created in 1984. The painting
depicts Jackson smiling in a "Thriller"-era jacket, with squiggles of
red and yellow in his hair.
