* "ACTIVE SPACES" OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS WRITERS+ARTISTS
DUE 1.15.2006
"Art made to attach to buildings or to be given
away? Wearable art for street demonstrations or
art that sets up a booth at a trade show? This is
the art of the interventionists, who trespass
into the everyday world to raise our awareness of
injustice and other social problems. These
artists don't preach or proselytize; they give us
the tools to form our own opinions and create our
own political actions..." - Description of "The
Interventionists", catalog of the exhibition by
the same name, MIT Press.
Discussions about activist or interventionist
practices in art have been proliferating; the
politically effective cultural production raises
a lot of interest among artists and curators.
Along with these practices, the issue of adequate
exhibition models has become increasingly
important: should an exhibition simply provide a
display, develop a theoretical framework or
contribute to the visibility of interventionist
projects? These practices challenge institutions
in an unprecedented manner, as they are often
attached to the traditional modes of display. For
some groups, the exhibition space provides
infrastructural framework and serves as a studio
or an office, from which the intervention is
conducted. Others still give the exhibition model
a chance, trusting it as a "legally protected"
alternative platform of free speech and
expression. This juxtaposition reveals the many
facets of the problem: should activist practices
be exhibited in art institutions at all, and is
there even such a thing as "activist curating"?
Perhaps the most important question is about the
possibility of an "active" exhibition space - one
that is capable of working in sync with these
projects and explicit in its attempt to affect a
larger social fabric.

*Interactive City : Call for Proposals
Deadline: December 09, 2005
The city has always been a site of transformation: of lives, of
populations, even of civilizations. With the rise of the mega city, however;
with the advent of 24/7 rush hours; with the inexorable conversion of public
space into commercial space; with the rise of surveillance; with the
computer-assisted precision of redlining; with the viral advance of the
xenophobic, the contemporary city is weighted down. We dream of something
more. The Interactive City seeks urban-scale projects for which the city is
not merely a palimpsest of our desires but an active participant in their
formation. From dynamic architectural skins to composite sky portraits to
walking in someone else's shoes to geocaches of urban lore to hybrid games
with a global audience, projects for the Interactive City should transform
the "new" technologies of mobile and pervasive computing, ubiquitous
networks, and locative media into experiences that matter. The Interactive
City is one of four major themes to be featured at ISEA2006 Symposium +
ZeroOne San Jose Festival. For more information visit
http://www.urban-atmospheres.net/ISEA2006/ .
