Boy continues 'miracle' recovery

By DONNA HARRIS

SUN HERALD

MOSS POINT -- A year after a chemical explosion left the young Isaiah Polk
blind, the boy can see a brighter future.

After a bottle of chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine exploded
near the child's face, doctors gave Mona Polk little hope her son would ever
see again without numerous surgeries, and the scarring from the chemical
burns could take years to fade. Isaiah, now 10, has vision in both eyes and
his scarring is almost nonexistent.

Polk said her son's healing was a miracle from God.

"He is blessed. We're blessed. To me he is a miracle," she said. "From the
prognosis from the first day to this one, God is so good."

On July 11, 2007, Isaiah and his friends were playing in the woods just past
his family's FEMA trailer in Pascagoula. They found a duffel bag that turned
out to be a dump for a meth lab. When Isaiah set the bag down, it exploded.
His injuries could have killed him.

"It's something I think about every day," Mona Polk said.

Chad Heck, assistant commander of the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson
County, said Isaiah's case touched his department. Soon after the accident,
anonymous tips led to the arrests of Joseph Terry Shimp and James Edward
McCall for their part in the meth lab that caused Isaiah's injuries.

Heck said 23 arrests have been made in connection with active meth lab
discoveries since July 11, 2007. It's hard to count the number of dump sites
they've found, Heck said. "It's about two or three a week. They're
everywhere," he said.

Polk said it saddens her to hear about other meth lab discoveries and
arrests.

"I don't know when people will wake up and realize it is so dangerous," she
said.

Polk said her family moved into a rental home in Moss Point with a big
backyard for Isaiah and his siblings. He has regular visits with a counselor
for the emotional duress he suffered from the explosion and the numerous
doctor visits. The change in schools, missed classes and the emotional
trauma contributed to lower grades, so Isaiah will repeat the fourth grade.

"It's been a rough year for him," she said.

The Mid-South Lions Club's Sight and Hearing Service paid for medical
services not donated, and the nearly $17,000 donated by the public
immediately after the accident was used for initial medical expenses, weekly
trips to a Jackson hospital and hotels.

Polk said just saying "thank you" to the community will never be enough for
their prayers, donations and concern.
