SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - When doctors told Sydney Bailey's family there
was little hope after an ATV accident put the girl in the coma, something
told the Bailey family to hang on.

What happened next, they said, was truly a miracle.

Sydney's father, Monte Bailey, said, "I love my kids. I would do anything
for my kids, but in this case there was not much I could do. Drove me plumb
nuts."

But Monte did the most important thing for Sydney. He didn't give up hope.

Sydney was in a serious ATV accident over Memorial Day weekend. With a
severe brain injury, doctors gave the family the option of taking her off
life support.

Monte said the Baileys wouldn't hear of it and knew at that point Sydney's
recovery was out of their hands.

Monte said, "We're now in the position for a genuine miracle. Nobody can
help Sydney except God."

The very next day, the impossible happened.

"She began to twitch and move and the pupils came back on line. It was real
minor stuff at first," Monte said.

Monte said he later woke up during the night and found Sydney's eyes wide
open.

Sydney is now strolling the gardens outside Primary Children's Medical
Center, awake, alert, and very much alive.

Monte said every day Sydney is more and more like her old self.

"She is ornery now. She has a fit, she gulps her pudding, she tells the
nurses [to] leave her alone. She started pulling her tubes out," Monte said.

Sydney's family hopes they can take her home soon and get her back out on
the boat she loves for some fishing and water skiing.

Tuesday Sydney read a few sentences and was assigned to rehab.

Her doctors said brain injuries are very complicated, so it is impossible to
know Sydney's long-term prognosis.

Sydney's family, however, are convinced the miracles will keep happening.

Monte said, "Now everybody in our family just has a constant maintenance of
faith, know God's going to finish what has been started here, give her back
[with] nothing broken, nothing missing."
