Welcome
Hello and welcome to this week’s issue of Balance Boosters. I hope you
have all had a great week. My week has been fairly uneventful—it’s the
weekend that has been a bear! I have been busy this weekend with our
Chautauqua of the Arts Festival, which is a two-day long fine arts and
crafts festival with around 200 artists participating. My job is to
organize and assign all of the volunteers for the event. It’s exciting
once it gets here, but I’m never sad to see it go. :-)
Last week I began to talk about appearance in the Feature Article: Face
the Day with Confidence. I would like to continue on this topic this
week in Dress Authentically. As a balanced woman it is important and
necessary to address all of the various areas of our lives and the way
that we look is no exception.

This Week’s Challenge:
Go through your closet this week and weed out any items you don’t wear,
don’t like, or just don’t feel good in.

Dress Authentically
By Dietta L. Stewart ã2002

One day I noticed that I wasn’t feeling very good about the way I
looked in the clothes that I had on. I wondered silently why I had wore
the clothes and why I had even purchased them in the first place. In my
opinion they made me look frumpy and unattractive.
If you are like me you have a few outfits in your closet that you really
feel great in. Then, there are those other clothes that you ask
yourself over and over again why you purchased them in the first place.
Somehow the clothes we wear have the power to either make us feel good
or make us feel bad about the way we look and sometimes even about who
we are.
One key to feeling good about ourselves on a regular basis is to wear
clothing that makes us feel good. Sometimes, I think that we feel
obligated to wear things just because they are in our closet regardless
of whether we feel good about wearing them or not. But this doesn’t have
to be. We can and should feel good inside our clothes.
At the risk of sounding a bit “out there” I would like to suggest that
we start “tuning into” our particular clothing personality. Get to know
what type of clothes we truly like without looking at the price tag.
Just look at who we are and let our clothes express that person. I call
this dressing authentically. Being real—inside and out. This may mean
that we have fewer clothes (especially if we have expensive taste) in
our closet. But, this is not a bad thing. I found this out when a
young lady at my church told me her secret to looking and feeling her
best. I told her that she always looked so nice and well put together.
I wondered how she did it. She told me that she didn’t really have a
lot of clothes. She mixed and matched her clothes to create several
different outfits. In other words, quantity is not always better, but
quality is.
Be true to who you are. Dress authentically.
