How to Be Successful
By Dietta L. Stewart ã2002
Have you ever known someone who says they’re going to do something
someday, but as soon as they say it you know its not going to happen?
You probably smile and nod, while in the back of your mind you’re
thinking, “Yeah Right.”
I used to be this way. I was always coming up with big dreams and big
ideas but none of these things ever happened because I had not yet
learned the basic keys to being successful in reaching my goals. Over
the years however, through much prayer and study, God has taught me how
to stop just saying I am going to do something, to actually doing it.
Here are a few things I have learned:
· Set goals that are realistic and that line up with the word of God as
well as the purpose God has for your life. Setting realistic goals
requires honesty. We have to be honest about our gifts and abilities.
It would be a little unrealistic for me to set a goal to become a
concert pianist within one year when I have never played the piano a day
in my life.
· Set a realistic time frame for achieving your goals. Don’t set a goal
to lose 10 pounds overnight!
· Be committed for the time it will take to reach your goals. My main
problem that kept me from reaching my goals in the past was that I lost
interest part of the way through and wasn’t committed to finishing what
I had started.
· Learn to persevere. Lack of perseverance was another problem I had
before God taught me there is a better way. When something got too hard
I would quit. But if we want to reach our goals we can’t quit! We have
to keep on keeping on!
These are just a few things God has taught me in the past few years,
there are many more things that I have learned and that I have yet to
learn. But, I believe these few things can help you if you are
struggling to achieve your goals.
Sidebar:
Please don’t feel pressured by the thought of setting and reaching
goals. The type of goals that we set will depend on the season of life
we are in. Don’t compare. I repeat. Don’t compare yourself with
anyone else or with any image—be who you are. Our goals should leave us
filled with peace, not turmoil. Run your goals through prayer. God
bless.
