JORDAN VALLEY APPEAL  ann hallam

Dear Supporter

NORTH JORDAN VALLEY APPEAL

Many of you came to our meeting in September to hear the moving presentation about the plight of the Palestinians under Israel occupation in the North Jordan area of the West Bank.

Israel controls 95% of the land in the Jordan Valley, and most of the 50,000 Palestinians live in a state of absolute poverty.Since 1967 they have been systematically denied basic human rights, particularly access to water and housing.

In June 2005 an Israeli spokesperson announced a plan to increase the number of settlers in the Jordan Valley by 50% in one year. The plan is already well advanced – settlers from Gaza are moving in, the silver arches of new greenhouses have materialised, large areas of Palestinian farmland have been confiscated and surrounded by fences and declared ‘Military Zones’as a new wave of evictions begins and the process of colonisation rolls on.

Much of the produce from the settlements is exported to the UK and sold on supermarket shelves under the 'Carmel’ logo, illegally labelled as produce of Israel in violation of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. In response, the Boycott Israeli Goods campaign in this country is gaining strength, but needs extending to Europe.

We are appealing for money to support the work of the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee in the North Jordan Valley. PARC works with Palestinian farmers to help develop food production under unbelievably difficult conditions, provides support networks to empower rural women and increase their role in society, runs training and skills workshops to develop sustainable agriculture and most importantly, to fight the Israeli land confiscation policies.

They are very keen to see the Boycott Israeli Goods campaign spread to Europe, and to do this they need money to employ a researcher and office worker to collect information for the campaign, and also to gather information for court cases.

The Brighton and Hove Palestine Campaign has pledged £100 to start the fund off, but this just a small start, so we are appealing to members to give what they can to this campaign – it is vital that we support and build the Boycott Campaign. Any donation will be gratefully received and you will be helping to make a difference for the thousands of Palestinians suffering under occupation.

For more information about the work of PARC go to their website:
