The LED lense is soft. I have seen lights using no optics that are
fairly young, but none showing long-term durability against both getting
poked and against abrasives thrown up by the wheel.
I think the ones I have seen have used either something like RTV
silicone or no protection at all. I suspect a bigger problem than water
is corrosion.
