by today's standards (well, 10 years ago...thinking of the jv1080), it is a
cinch to program. the entire map of generators envelopes and filters are on
top of the keyboard and it's pretty straightforward. it was the first
keyboard i ever had, and without any experience i was able to make every
sound i wanted (at least, as far as what it could produce). the unison
function was incredible - if you solo a lot, this thing had a FAT fat sound.
great for funk, but also it was right around the time that van halen came
out with "1984" and those long sweeping filters in the prelude to "jump"
damn near sounded like they came from a bit one, i'm sure they didn't. i
played in bands covering both styles and it was a workhorse at the time.
i did a lot of reading last night...just trying to remember the board...and
there are many, many mentions of this keyboard and the lack of recognition
and respect it got. i bought it from this little music store, the guy had
about 3 keyboards, can't even imagine how he got his hands on it. if you
like the 80's keyboard sounds, especially the sawtooth heavy-cutoff
frequency sounds like used on "Jump", this is the board! it was the last
ditch effort of an italian manufacturer, whose brother's company was
actually bought out by Roland in the late 80's. Sequential Circuits worked
closely with these guys just before they gave up, and before they had the
money to distribute their own creations. Unique was the brand name the bit
one was marketed under in US, i guess. i remember seeing an ad in keyboard
magazine at the time for the unique and thinking...HEY...they ripped off
Crumar!!! little did i know...i had the italian version.
i just hope it's in working condition after the fuse is replaced. anyone
have any info about the fuse holder and the size fuse it uses?

Anyway - I have a Unique DBM I picked up several years ago on eBay
and I haven't had a chance to turn it on. I got the User's Manual
with it, too. It was supposed to be in fully working order when I
bought it.
Is there anybody out there that has hands-on experience with these?
How do they sound. They're supposed to be a bitch to program and they
don't seem to get much respect (i.e. mention) on any of the mainstream
lists.
It would be fun having more active users start exchanging info about
these synths.
