HOT NEWS
--------------------------
Due to increasing complaints from our users about Topica, we are in the
process of moving this newsletter to Yahoo!Groups. You should be
receiving an invitation to join the new list over the next two weeks.
Some of you have opted out of receiving invitations and I will be
sending you a direct email letting you know about the new site. Updates
will always be available on the Blue Web'n site at

HOT SITE OF THE WEEK
--------------------------
LifeWorks (NIH)
http://science.education.nih.gov/LifeWorks.nsf/feature/index.htm

LifeWorksTM is an interactive career exploration web site for middle and
high school students. Users can browse for information on more than 100
medical science and health careers by title, education required,
interest area, or median salary. Alternatively, the "Career Finder" can
be used to generate a customized list of careers especially suited for
users' skills and interests. LifeWorks promotes awareness of the wide
variety of occupations in health and medical sciences and the range of
opportunities at different education levels. The site complements its
factual career data by highlighting true stories of successful people.
They illustrate the variety of real-life career pathways, from the
carefully planned to the unpredictable.

Archaelogy Channel Video Guide
http://www.archaeologychannel.org/content/videoguide.asp

The Video Guide is a list of short, free videos featuring various
archaelogical sites all over the world. The list is not long; but may
provide something a little different. The Guide can be sorted
alphabetically, by location, or using a visual map of the world. The
Archaeology Channel utilizes media (films, news, commentary, interactive
programs, etc.) to provide information about "past human lifeways."
They are promoting archaeology in education through the development and
implementation of school curricula, teacher training, and exhibits. In
addition to the videos, there are audio tracks and Teacher Resources
(http://www.archaeologychannel.org/content/TeacherResources.asp). The
Teacher Resources includes links to Activities, Exhibits, Interactive,
Lesson Plans , Newsletters , Organizations, Programs, Workshops, and
more.

BobQuits

Many smokers start sometime during their K-12 years. Here are two great
websites about quitting. (See also MaryQuits
http://www.maryquits.com/). The smokers in these documentaries are real
people. It's easy to become involved in their stories because we all
know and possibly love someone just like them. The American Legacy
Foundation is dedicated to building a world where young people reject
tobacco and anyone can quit. The Foundation was established in March
1999 as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between a
coalition of attorneys general in 46 states and five U.S. territories
and the tobacco industry, and is funded primarily by payments designated
by the settlement. The Foundation has two goals that guide its work
toward creating tobacco-free generations: to arm all young people with
the knowledge and tools to reject tobacco and to eliminate disparities
in access to tobacco prevention and cessation services. Designed for
high or low bandwidth (Flash).

Grade Connect
http://www.gradeconnect.com/

After becoming unsatisfied with costly systems presently available,
teachers in Pennsylvania devised a free grade book website. The site,
called GradeConnect.com, allows teachers to securely post grades,
homework assignments, messages and more to students and their parents.
Grade Connect also enables automated e-mail to students and parents.
Teachers can even generate a progress report or failure warning with
just a few clicks of the mouse. Perhaps the site's best feature is that
it's completely free to use. The cost of maintenance is offset by
donations and sponsored advertisements. (Schools may opt-out of seeing
advertisements in return for a fee that would replace the advertisement
income.) A complete usage manual is located at
http://www.gradeconnect.com/documentation/manual.pdf. You can also sign
up for a demo account. Attractive and appears easy to use. Launched
September 2003 by Grade Connect, Inc.
