Dear friends of Bow Triplets,
Again we have had some exciting and wonderful times since we
were last in touch. We heard some really great music in the West
Midlands of England and we made a lot of new friends there too.
After the August and September concerts in Switzerland we are
now having all of October off in preparation for completing the new CD
In spite of the studio work and school concerts, we have some Swiss,
public concerts coming up over the next months and we will publish
them all in this newsletter.
So here it is, newsletter no 13 of October 2002.

1. Irish Music – World Music? (by Heidi Sigfalk)
We are constantly asked why Bow Triplets, being non Irish and living in
Switzerland, play Irish / Celtic music. This would be the same as asking
Keith Jarret, who is white, why he plays Jazz, Midori, being Japanese,
why she plays Bach, Nigel Kennedy, who is British, why he plays
Mozart, or, indeed, anyone who is not American, why they play Country
music. Musicians choose their musical genre based on the "feeling" that
flows through them, and enters their hearts with a unexplainable
passion,
when they experience certain sounds and vibrations. They have found
their "musical language", so to speak, and through this language, they
are able to express themselves in a field of art where their creativity
can
blossom and grow.
It's the same way with us, but maybe there is a special magic
attached to Celtic music which gives it its very own status in the
world of musical languages and enhances it with a certain "holiness"
and allows everybody to sense that this music has to be treated with
utmost reverence.
In Ireland, this magical effect is apparent when one catches an exited
"gleam" in the eyes of each traveller...an excitement that stays with
them, as they return home.
Over hundreds of years so many Irish had to migrate from their country
that today there are more Irish descendants around the world than in
Ireland itself. Irish blood runs through the veins of 70 million people
world wide. They have taken with them the "gleam" in their eyes as
well as their music. This is why Irish music is played and heard and
its magic felt all over the world.
It is interesting to know, that the first settlers of Ireland came
around
9000 BC and they were not Celts. The first cities in Ireland were built
by Vikings. The Celts ruled the major part of Europe before they were
forced west and onto Ireland. Ireland, Scotland and the British Isles
are
a melting pot of different peoples who, in search for a new life left
their
former homes which are probably to be found all over Europe.
The circle closes, once arriving from many countries, the Irish again go
out into the whole world. The musical circle also closes, with the music
in which we can feel the common roots and the human ties that we all
share. This is why we look at Celtic music as an international language,
spoken by all those whose hearts have been touched by it.

2. Burntwood festival, Staffordshire, highlights.
The 2002 festival was wonderful and a dream come true for its
organisers. A dream that had extended from one man's vision to an
outstanding team effort.
The line up for a festival this size (approx. 700 tickets sold) was
really
quite impressive we thought.
On two main stages and in a pub tent, there were practically non stop
performances with various workshops in between. The audience
consisted of young and old with very many families that had brought
their tents to make a weekend of it. The weather, as it turned out,
was just perfect for camping and there were smiling, happy faces
throughout the festival.
Bow Triplets played three concerts, one each night, and we would like
to thank the English people for making us feel so very welcome and
appreciated.
Here are some highlights:
GRACE NOTES:
Helen, Lynda and Maggie amazed and equally delighted all
with their three part harmony a capella singing which lifted and
inspired.
Their rendition of "John Ball" by Sidney Carter sent shivers down the
spines of the Bow Triplets and with their kind permission it will soon
be a part of our repertoire for this coming season.
CHRIS WHILE and JULIE MATTHEWS:
This magnificent duo's tours throughout Europe, UK and Australia
have given them an energetic, high stepping stage
presence. Their superb skills as singers, songwriters and
musicians certainly impressed everyone there, including us.
ARANMORE:
Mike Burnham is a master violinist and Meg Lawrie an all England
and Ireland Champion Ballad Singer. This Celtic duo still gives
us goose pimples thinking back on them.
WILD CLOVER:
An energetic 5 piece band of youngsters from Birmingham, playing
some of the most foot tapping Irish music we have ever heard and that
with unbelievable dexterity while at the same time laughing and
making jokes.
JOHN WRIGHT BAND:
John fronted a new lineup on his Saturday night concert and for so
many that have come to love his tremendous talent, this was a real
treat.
We unfortunatelly missed him as we were playing simultaneously on the
other stage.
Well, there were many more great musicians, story tellers and poets
but we can only mention a few in this newsletter.
Thank you also to Barry Yates and his Staffordshire Men who not only
entertained us throughout the festival but so kindly helped us feel
welcomed.

We played here once many years ago with "Irish Connection"
and it is a concert type venue with rows of chairs in front of the
stage.

4. mp3.com, new CDs and new downloading source.
September was an exciting mp3.com month for Bow Triplets with
top 10 chart positions in three different genres and three tracks in
top 10 in the Bluegrass genre alone. The other two charts we topped
were Folk and Mood Music. Interestingly enough we didn't make
top 10 in the Celtic charts but we had 14 songs amongst the first 40
out of thousands.

The Folksinger/guitarist Ronnie Carthy is coming to Switzerland

6. New CD Girlandia. A great buy.
We have just received a copy of GIRLANDIA's new CD
"Let's Talk About The Way Things Go"
It is their third album and in our view the very best so far.
It is an even mix of beautiful ballads by Erwin Bucher and
traditional tunes. Quite a bit of interesting mixing with the musicians'
own very personal musical influences. They are all excellent
instrumentalists and we warmly recommend their CD.

Liebe Bow Triplets Freunde
Wieder haben wir schöne Zeiten erlebt seit wir das letzte mal
mit Euch in Kontakt waren. Wir hörten viele schöne Musik in
England und schlossen dort auch viele neue Freundschaften.
Nach den August und September Konzerten in der Schweiz
haben wir jetzt den ganzen Monat Oktober frei um uns für die
abschliessende CD Aufnahmen vorzubereiten. Trotz Studioarbeit
und Schulhauskonzerte gibt es einige öffentliche Konzerte in
der Schweiz in nächster Zeit und wir publizieren sie hier in diesem
Rundbrief.

1. Irische Musik – Weltmusik? (Artikel von Heidi Sigfalk)
Immer wieder wird uns die Frage gestellt, wieso wir als Nicht-Iren,
in der Schweiz lebend irische bzw. keltische Musik machen. Eigentlich
ist das eine komische Frage, denn ich glaube nicht, dass man auf die
Idee kommt, z.B. Suzanne Klee oder John Brack zu fragen, warum sie
Country-Music machen, oder Keith Jarret, warum er als Weisser
Jazz-Musiker ist oder einen Japaner, wieso er Bach und Mozart spielt.
Bei ihnen kann man es sich denken: ihnen gefällt die Musik, sie ist
ihnen ans Herz gewachsen, sie haben eine musikalische Sprache
gefunden, in der sie sich ausdrücken können und ein künstlerisches
Betätigungsfeld, in dem sie sich kreativ entfalten können.
Bei uns ist das nicht anders, aber vielleicht haftet der keltischen
Musik
ein gewisser unfassbarer Zauber an, welcher dieser Musik eine ihr ganz
eigene Position in der Weltsprache Musik gibt, sie mit einer Art
Heiligkeit umgibt, von der alle spüren, dass man ihr Sorge tragen muss.
Besonders in Irland ist etwas von dieser geheimnisvollen
Zauberhaftigkeit spürbar, welche offenbar in jedem Reisenden etwas
anrührt, das er nachher als Glanz in den Augen mit nach Hause nimmt.
Während der letzten Jahrhunderte mussten immer wieder Iren ihre
Heimat verlassen, so dass heute auf der ganzen Welt verstreut mehr
Iren leben als in Irland selbst. Mann vermutet, dass heute durch etwa
70 millionen Menschen irisches Blut fliesst.
Sie haben sowohl den Glanz in den Augen als auch ihre Musik aus
der Heimat mitgenommen und so kommt es, dass man überall auf der
Welt irische Musik hört und spielt und ihren Zauber spüren kann.
Die ersten Einwanderer kamen um etwa 9000 v. Chr. nach Irland.
Woher sie genau kamen ist ungewiss, aber es waren keine Kelten.
Mann weiss, dass die ersten Städte Irlands von Vikingern erbaut
wurden.
Will man auf der Suche nach Erklärungen noch weiter in der
Geschichte zurückgehen und nach dem Ursprung der Kelten selbst
fragen, so liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass die Grüne Insel, wie auch
Schottland und der Süden Englands zu einem Schmelztiegel
verschiedener Völker geworden ist, welche auf der Suche nach neuem
Lebensraum einst ihre Heimat verlassen haben, die wahrscheinlich in
ganz Europa zu suchen ist. Der Kreis schliesst sich: einst aus vielen
Ländern kommend, gehen die Iren wieder hinaus in ganze Welt. Und
der Kreis schliesst sich in der Musik, in der wir heute noch die
gemeinsamen Wurzeln und die menschliche Verbundenheit miteinander
spüren können. Keltische Musik ist damit eine internationale Sprache,
welche all diejenigen sprechen, deren Herz sie angerührt hat.

2. Burntwood festival, Staffordshire, unsere Favouriten.
Das 2002 Festival war wunderschön.
Für die Organisatoren wurde ein Traum wahr. Uhrsprünglich die Idee
eines einzelnen Mannes, hat sich die Organisation des Festivals
zu einer hervorragenden Teamleistung entwickelt.
Das Programm war für ein Festival dieser Grösse (700 Eintritte
verkauft) beeindruckend.
Auf zwei Hauptbühnen und in einem Bierzelt waren praktisch
non stop Konzerte zu hören mit verschiedenen Workshops dazwischen.
Das Publikum bestand aus Jung und Alt mit vielen Familien die ihre
Zelte mitgebracht hatten, um das ganze Wochenende bleiben zu können.
Das Wetter war perfekt zum Zelten und wir sahen lächelnde
Gesichter überall.
Bow Triplets spielten an drei Abenden und wir möchten
den Engländern dafür danken, dass sie uns so herzlich empfangen haben.
Hier sind einige unserer Favouriten aufgeführt::
GRACE NOTES:
Helen, Linda und Maggie versetzten uns alle in helles Entzücken
mit ihrem drestimmigen a capella Gesang.
Ihre Version von "John Ball" von Sidney Carter gab uns Gänzehaut
beim Zuhören und mit ihrer freundlichen Erlaubnis wird dieses
Stück bald in Bow Triplets Repertoire in der kommenden Saison
zu hören sein.
CHRIS WHILE und JULIE MATTHEWS:
Ihre Tournees durch Europa und Australien haben ihnen viel
Bühnenerfahrung gegeben und so standen sie da, strotzend von
Energie. Ihr Talent als Sänger, Liedermacher und Instrumentalisten
beeindruckten alle.
ARANMORE:

alles sei total einfach gewesen.
JOHNH WRIGHT BAND:
John hatte eine neue Band and seinem Samstag Konzert und für
so viele, die sein grosses Talent schätzen und lieben gelernt haben,
war dieses Konzert natürlich ein grosses Fest.
Leider haben wir ihn verpasst, da Bow Triplets gleichzeitig auf der
andere Bühne gespielt haben.
Viele weitere Leckerbissen waren da, Musiker, Geschichtenerzähler
und Poeten aber wir können nur einige in diesem Rundbrief erwähnen.
Danke auch an Barry Yates und seine "Staffordshire Men", die uns
nicht nur während des ganzen Festivals unterhalten haben, sondern
auch sonst für unser Wohl gesorgt haben.

5. Ronnie Carthy kommt in die Schweiz.
Der Folksänger Ronnie Carthy aus Irland kommt in die Schweiz
am 9. Dezember. Wir werden seine Konzerte später ankündigen.
Jetzt schon können wir verraten, dass es wieder eine irische "session"
in der Sofaecke von der Besenbar in Stammheim geben wird.
Natürlich mit Ronnie, Heidi und Stef und weitere Musiker.

Wir haben soeben Girlandias neuste CD
"Let's Talk About The Way Things Go" erhalten.
Es ist ihre dritte CD und unserer Meinung nach die allerbeste
bis jetzt. Es ist eine ebene Mischung aus schönen Balladen von
Erwin Bucher und traditionellen Instrumentalstücken.
Einige interessante Mischungen auch mit den persönlichen
musikalischen Einflüssen der einzelnen Musiker.
Sie sind alle sehr gute Instrumentalisten und wir können ihre CD
wärmstens empfehlen.
