Dear friends of Bow Triplets,
It's nice writing to you again and here is the first newsletter in 2004.
Ok, we know the year is already well on its way but sometimes
playing comes before writing and believe us, we're working on some
new and very beautiful musicJ.

1. Bow Triplets live in Schaffhausen, St. Patrick's Night.
For the fourth year, Bow Triplets will be performing live in the
restaurant
"Thiergarten" in Schaffhausen. It is becoming a very popular tradition
with traditional music and fine Irish food and drinks. All three rooms
of the restaurant, including the bar have been fully booked in previous
years so be out early to book your tickets and request a table in the
"best" room, the front room if you can. Well, we're not that pretty to
look at but it's still nicer if you can be in eye contact with the band.
And…. seing it's St. Patrick's Night, we've organized for pro dancer
Christine Karo to come along and dance for you in each set.
She'll perform solo soft –and hard shoe dances for your pleasure.
When? Saturday 20. March. Door opens at 7 pm, we start playing
around 8.30 pm.

2. Who was St. Patrick and why the Shamrock? Article by Stef.
St. Patrick's Day
This special day is becoming more and more known to people
who don't have much or anything to do with Ireland or the Irish.
Starting in March here in Switzerland, you see many posters and
ads in the papers, advertising St. Patrick's events with parties,
music, dancing etc. Here is some information for those who
want to and don't yet know just who St. Patrick was.
The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland,
was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn. Until
he was 16, he considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was
captured and taken to Ireland by a group of Irish marauders that raided
his village. During those years of captivity, he came closer to
Christianity. He adopted the Christian name Patrick, escaped from
slavery after six years and went back to England to study for a period
of about fifteen years. During his training he became aware that his
calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity. His wishes were to
return to Ireland, to do this and eventually , he was appointed as
second bishop to Ireland.
Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. And this fact upset
the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped
each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries
across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would
aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity. His
mission
in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to
County Down. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been
commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.
Much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick's Day. Not much of it is
actually substantiated. Some of this lore includes the belief that
Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a
sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland. Of course,
no snakes were ever native to Ireland, and some people think this is a
metaphor for the conversion of the pagans.
One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. And this stems from a
more bona fide Irish tale that tells how Patrick used the three-leafed
shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent
how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate
elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of
wearing a shamrock on his feast day. St. Patrick's Day is followed by
the festive celebrations of St. Patrick's Night, for practical reasons
mostly the first Saturday following March 17. Irish people and friends
of Ireland all over the world celebrate this event with traditional
music,
dance, food and drink.

3. Meet Brendan Wade, new Bow Triplets family member.
Brendan Wade has already started rehearsing with Bow Triplets,
we are excited, delighted and proud to announce that he will in future
be seen and heard frequently on stage with us.
He is an excellent Singer and plays Uilleann Pipes, Guitar, Bouzouki
and Whistles. Those of you who haven't already heard his music are
going to love him.
Brendan comes from Wexford in the south east of Ireland. He was born
into a very musical family, and took up music as a career playing Irish
traditional and folk music.
In the 1980s Brendan became lead singer with the band
Cry Before Dawn , which was voted best Irish band in 1990 at the
national music awards. They had two top selling albums and toured
extensively.
In 1996 Brendan , together with Paul Bell wrote a tribute to Wexford
Hurling (national Sport) which went to No.1 in Ireland. The songs are
now part of the Wexford folklore.
In 1998 he played uilleann pipes on the album of Angelo Branduardi
(Il Dito E La Luna).
He is now living in Winterthur Switzerland.
Brendan, be most welcome in our musical family and we're all looking

Es macht Spass, Euch wieder zu schreiben und hier ist unser erster
Rundbrief im 2004.
Ok, wir wissen, dass das neue Jahr schon seit einer Weile da ist
aber manchmal kommt das Spielen vor dem Schreiben und Ihr könnt
es glauben, wir arbeiten momentan an einigen neuen und
wunderschoenen Stuecken.
Wir hoffen, moeglichst viele von Euch in diesem Jahr zu sehen oder
etwas von Euch zu hoeren, wir lesen eure emails sehr gerne.

1. Bow Triplets live in Schaffhausen, St. Patrick's Night.
Es ist schon das vierte Jahr, dass Bow Triplets live im Restaurant
Thiergarten in Schaffhausen spielt. Dieser Anlass ist dabei, eine
beliebte Tradition zu werden mit traditioneller Musik und feinem,
irischem Essen. Alle drei Raeume des Restaurants waren in den
vorhergehenden Anlaessen ausgebucht, es empfiehlt sich also,
moeglichst frueh Karten zu reservieren. Versucht wenn moeglich
einen Tisch im "besten" Raum, dem Vorderrestaurant, zu bekommen.
Gut, wir sind nicht uebermaessig schoen zum Anschauen, aber es
ist trotzdem noch stimmungsvoller, wenn direkten Blickkontakt
zur Band moeglich ist.
Und.....da es St. Patrick's Night ist, haben wir die Profitaenzerin
Christine Karo fuer Euch engagiert. Sie wird in jedem Set, in bester
"Riverdancemanier", irische Solotaenze vorfuehren.
Wann? Samstag, 20. Maerz. Tueroeffnung 19.00 Uhr, wir fangen ca.
um 20.30 Uhr an zu spielen.

2. Wer war St. Patrick und warum das Kleeblatt?
Artikel vom Stef.
St. Patrick's Tag
Immer mehr Leute, die wenig oder nichts mit Irland und den Iren zu tun
haben, haben trotzdem von diesem besonderen Tag gehört. Ab März
kann man hier in der Schweiz Posters sehen oder Zeitungsinserate
lesen, die für St.Patricks Anlässe werben. Anlässe, die irische Musik
und Tanz anbieten. Hier etwas mehr Information für diejenigen, die
gerne wissen möchten, wer St. Patrick war.
Der Mann der als St. Patrick Irlands Hauptheiliger werden sollte kam in
Wales um ca. 350 nach Christus zur Welt. Es hiess Maewyn und war
ein Heide bis zu seinem 16 Lebensjahr.
Zu dieser Zeit wurde er durch eine Gruppe irischer Pluenderer, die sein
Dorf ueberfielen, gefangengenommen und nach Irland geführt. Während
den darauffolgenden Jahren der Gefangenschaft bekehrte er sich zur
Christentum. Er nahm den christlichen Namen Patrick an, floh nach
sechs Jahren Sklaverei nach England und studierte während ca. 15
Jahren die christliche Lehre. Er verspürte den Ruf, Heiden zum
Christentum zu bekehren und ging schlussendlich als Bischof nach
Irland zurück, um seine Arbeit der Bekehrung dort anzufangen.
Patrick war ziemlich erfolgreich in seiner Berufung und war dadurch
ein Dorn in den Augen der Druiden. Er wurde mehrmals verhaftet aber
konnte jedesmal fliehen. Er reiste kreuz und quer durch Irland und
gründete viele Klöster im ganzen Land. Auch Schulen und Kirchen
wurden auf seine Initiative hin errichtet, alles zum Zweck der Bekehrung
Irlands zum katholischen Glauben. Seine Mission dauerte 30 Jahre,
danach liess er sich im County Down im heutigen Nordirland nieder.
Er starb am 17.März 461 nach Christus und dieser Tag wurde zum
Nationalfeiertag Irlands.
St. Patrick's Tag ist mit vielen folkloristischen Legenden behaftet
wovon nur wenige mit belegte Tatsachen zu tun haben. Es wird erzählt,
dass Patrick Tote wieder lebendig machen konnte oder, dass eine von
ihm gehaltene Bergpredigt sämtliche Schlangen von Irland getrieben
habe. Irland hat tatsächlich nie einheimische Schlangenarten gehabt
und die Geschichte mit den Schlangen wird von manchen als
symbolisch für die Konvertierung der Heiden zu Christen betrachtet.
Ein Symbol von St. Patrick und Irland ist der Dreiblattklee
"Shamrock". Das Kleeblatt stammt von einer eher wahrscheinlicheren
Geschichte darüber, wie Patrick das Kleeblatt benutzt hat, um die
heilige Dreifaltigkeit zu erklären. Er verwendete es in seinen
Predigten, um zu demonstrieren, wie der Vater, der Sohn und der
heilige Geist als verschiedene Elemente in einer Einheit sein konnten.
Seine Gefolgsleute machten eine Sitte daraus, das dreiblättrige
Kleeblatt an seinem Feiertag, den 17. März, zu tragen und dieser
Tradition lebt noch heute. St. Patrick's Nacht wird hauptsächlich
aus praktischen Gründen, meist am Wochenende nach dem 17.03.
gefeiert. Iren und Freunde Irlands in allen Ländern feiern diesen
Abend mit traditioneller Musik, Tanz, Essen und Getränke.

3. Wir stellen vor: Uilleann Piper Brendan Wade,
neues Mitglied der Bow Triplets Familie.
Brendan Wade hat schon angefangen, mit Bow Triplets zu proben.
Wir sind hoch erfreut und stolz darauf, Euch mitzuteilen, dass er
kuenftig desoeftern auf der Buehne mit uns zu sehen und zu hoeren
sein wird.
Brendan ist ein hervorragender Saenger und spielt Uillean Pipes
(irischer Dudelsack), Gitarre, Bouzouki und Whistles. Wenn Ihr ihn
noch nicht kennt....Ihr werdet begeistert sein.
Er kommt aus Wexford im Suedosten Irlands. Geboren in einer sehr
musikalischen Familie, fing er frueh eine berufliche Musikkarriere als
traditioneller, irischer Volksmusiker an.
Im 1980 wurde Brendan Bandleader in der bekanten Band
"Cry Before Dawn". Diese Gruppe wurde in den irischen
"National Music Awards" 1990 als die beste irische Band gewaehlt.
Sie hatten zwei "best seller" CDs und gingen auf ausgedehnten
Tournèes.
Im 1996 schrieb Brendan, zusammen mit Paul Bell, Lieder als Ehrung
an den Nationalsport Wexford Hurling: Diese wurden schnell Nummer 1
in Irland. Heute sind sie ein Teil der Wexford Folklore.
1998 spielte er Uillean Pipes auf der CD von Angelo Branduardi

Er wohnt jetzt in Winterthur.

Pat Murphy ist einer der gefragtesten Lehrer in Irland. Er ist der Autor
der Setdancingbücher „Toss the Feathers“ Er ist fast jedes
Wochenende am Unterrichten in Irland, ganz Europa, Amerika und
Kanada und ist dabei noch vollamtlich Lehrer an einer Grundschule.
Auch Tony Ryan wird dabei sein. Die beiden sind gute Freunde und ein
tolles Team, und sie freuen sich wieder zusammenzuarbeiten.
Auch Tony ist ein sehr erfahrener Lehrer mit einem goldenen Herzen
und viel Geduld und Liebe für die Anfänger.
