I'm still looking for volunteers to help me with this e-newsletter
~1/2 per week from their home computer (community service credit
given to high schoolers, letters of recommendation given to all
reliable volunteers & it can be used on resumes). Here's the special
report:
The elections this year are important. Here is some information
concerned citizens should know, including voting dates, FAQs, news
stories, and links to more information (including my notes from the
candidate forum for District 9 County Council and Board of Education
candidates).
Make sure it's on your calendar:
Primary Election - September 12, 2006
(too late to register for primary if not already registered)
General Election - November 7, 2006 (deadline to register 21 days prior)
Some voting FAQs:
Must I vote for the candidates of the party that I am registered with?
It depends. In the primary election, you are only permitted to vote
for candidates of the same party with which you are registered. In
the general election, you can vote for any candidate regardless of
party affiliation.
Can someone vote without having his or her voter's card?
Yes, however, it is suggested that the voter have a form of
identification available to show the election judges if requested.
Can I write-in the name of a candidate?
Primary Election - No.
General Election - Yes.
Instructions and a listing of the candidates are posted at the polling place.

Judge nixes Maryland early voting
Rules state constitution limits balloting to one day
Updated: 3:05 p.m. ET Aug 11, 2006
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Early voting in Maryland is illegal because the
state's constitution allows only one day of voting, an Anne Arundel
County Circuit Court judge ruled Friday.
Silkworth also ruled that it would be illegal to allow voters to cast
ballots outside their home precincts, as was the plan under the new
early voting law.
"The General Assembly exceeded its constitutional authority in
enacting the early voting statutes," Silkworth wrote in his opinion.

Md. ballot language questioned
Reworded amendment appears designed to confuse, some say
By Andrew A. Green and Tom Pelton

The Ehrlich administration has revised the General Assembly's
suggested wording of a high-profile ballot question restricting state
land sales in a way legislative leaders and environmentalists say
appears designed to confuse and mislead voters.
At issue is the description of a proposed constitutional amendment
giving the General Assembly veto power over the government's ability
to sell parkland. The Assembly adopted the amendment in 2005 after an
aborted Ehrlich administration proposal to sell protected forest in
St. Mary's County to a politically connected contracting company
owner. Voters must concur for the constitutional change to become
final.
The legislature's suggested description - contained in legislation
that passed the Senate last year by a 47-0 vote and the House of
Delegates by a 117-17 tally - was one sentence long. It said the
state Board of Public Works cannot approve the sale or transfer of
land "without the express approval of the General Assembly or of a
committee that the General Assembly designates by statute, resolution
or rule."
122-word difference
In all, the legislature's version is 52 words. The administration's
is 174 words.
The Court of Appeals is already due to rule on the issues of early
voting and the legislature's attempt to fire the Public Service
Commission, both of which pit Ehrlich, the incumbent Republican,
against his Democratic opponent and Democrats in the General Assembly.
