On friday, the Wall Street Journal ran a page one article about our
sanctuary's rehabilitation of roosters used in cockfighting. As the
article notes, we are the only sanctuary to help these birds, most of
whom are summarily killed when confiscated from cockfighting
operations.
The article may be the first time that a mainstream publication has
contested the cockfighters' claim that these roosters are naturally
aggressive. The article discusses the ways that the birds are drugged
and terrified and quotes the sanctuary's assertion that the birds fight
because they are afraid rather than because they are aggressive.
The article was accompanied by a lovely line drawing of the bird we
call Saturn. He and several other birds were named and described in the
article. This may be the first time that a named chicken was pictured
and described as an individual on the front page of this major
newspaper. While it seems very natural to us to see the birds as
individuals with unique traits and life histories, most people see
chickens as interchangeable things. An article like this can have a
subtle impact on consciousness, implicitly teaching people to think of
the birds as individuals while explicitly teaching about the evils of
cockfighting.
Since its publication in the WSJ, the article has been reprinted in the
Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Knoxville News Sentinel, and the Arizona
Republic. It will be reprinted in a Delaware newspaper later this week.
The article also prompted a local news station to do a feature on our
sanctuary, again helping to contest the claims of the proponents of
cockfighting and teaching people to see chickens as individuals.
