Heat Wave
The heat wave has been hard on the birds and the people here at the
sanctuary. As we sit sweating in the stifling heat, we find our minds
turning yet again to the problem of global warming, which is ongoing
and will kill off more than half the plant and animal species on earth
if not arrested.
What are you doing about global warming? If you don't have a ready
answer go -- right now -- to our new web page on climate change and
decide -- today -- what you are going to start doing right away:

Eastern Shore Sanctuary at AR2006
It's not too late to register and attend the national Animal Rights
2006 conference in DC on 10-14 August. The Eastern Shore Sanctuary will
be there with a vengeance. In addition to staffing our information
table, sanctuary cofounder pattrice jones will speak at the plenary
session on Paths to Animal Liberation and appear on the following
panels: Nature of Social Change, Engaging Community, Commonality of
Oppression, Engaging Public Interest, Animals and Global Trade,
Engaging Abroad, and Forging Coalitions.
This year, the conference organizers have made it easy for attendees
and presenters to schedule extra sessions. Join the roundtable
discussion on Feminism and Animal Liberation to be moderated by
pattrice and Marjorie Spiegel at dinnertime on Friday. An extra session
on freeganism also is in the works. Pattrice says: Don't miss that one.
And, please do drop by to say hello to pattrice, especially if you see
her sitting alone at our information table. Remember, she's shy and
always appreciates it when other people start conversations. If you see
a young man sitting at our table, that's one of our new local helpers.
Say, "Hi Chris." Since they're both named Christopher, you can't go
wrong.
You can register for the conference online or at the event. For more

Sanctuary Update
Last week, we welcomed a group of escapees from the local poultry
industry. These birds must have eluded the chicken catchers or jumped
from a transport truck. They ended up in the yard of a local citizen
who then found us on the internet and asked her neighbor to drive the
birds to us. They arrived stinking and covered in filth, as all factory
farmed birds are. But, within days, they had preened and dust bathed
themselves back to the state of healthy cleanliness that birds prefer.
They're very young (chickens are killed for meat at only six or eight
weeks of age) and remind us of the very first birds we took in --
Viktor, Violet, and Chickweed -- who inspired us to start the sanctuary
back in 2000.
