VT Vegan Meet-Up
In August, soon after moving to Vermont, Miriam Jones and Aram Polster
founded the Springfield Vegan Meet-Up Group in an attempt to form
alliances and connections between the Eastern Shore Sanctuary and local
vegans and animal rights activists. We've had two meet-ups since then,
each of which were attended by a small but very committed group of
people. Plans are in the works to organize events with other Vegan
Meet-Up groups in the area with the hopes of a long-term growth in the
number of core volunteers who can work with the sanctuary, as well as
help plan community-based educational events.
Living Green
On September 5, 2009, the Eastern Shore Sanctuary and Education Center
teamed with the Springfield Vegan Meet-Up Group to host a table at the
Live Green Expo in Manchester, VT. Here is a link to the event:
http://www.rileyrink.com/livegreen/
The purpose of the Expo was to showcase many of the local efforts
underway to live in a "greener" fashion. Since factory farming is the
single most environmentally destructive practice in which humans
engage, this was a perfect opportunity to get the word out to folks who
care about the environment but might not have made the connections to
their own dinner plates.
Hundreds of people attended on what turned out to be a glorious
pre-autumn day, and many of those folks did indeed come past our booth,
which was nestled among other exhibitors who were discussing various
alternative energy options such as solar and geothermal energy. We gave
out a wide variety of literature, including handouts written by Eastern
Shore Sanctuary co-founder pattrice jones which address the connections
between factory farming and global climate change.
For our first Vermont-based event, we would call the day a success.
Eating Green
Meanwhile, sanctuary co-founder pattrice jones spoke at the recent
Eating Green event in St. Paul, MN, stressing the need not only to not
only be personally vegan but also work for a world in which anybody who
wants to be vegan can be so. Using the story of a young man who used to
help out at the sanctuary but, being a pre-teen from an impoverished
family, had to eat whatever was on offer at home and at the free lunch
program at school. He was so happy the one day -- Thanksgiving -- when
there was enough food at a family dinner that he could pass up the meat
without going hungry!
In order to ensure that everybody who wants to do so can go vegan,
animal advocates can work within their local communities to bring
farmer's markets to impoverished urban neighborhoods, support urban
gardening projects, make sure stores specializing in vegan and
vegetarian accept WIC and food stamps, see that local food banks are
stocked with vegan options, and ensure that free breakfast and lunch
programs include vegan options.
This is one of many "connections" animal advocates cannot neglect if we
truly want to free the animals. Visit the "connections" section of our
website to learn more:

Relocation and Expansion
In case you missed the news, the Eastern Shore Sanctuary has moved to
Vermont! Check out our blog posting about the event:
http://blog.bravebirds.org/archives/32
In order to facilitate the move, we put up two new coops and several
hundred feet of five-foot-tall fencing. We were able to bring much of
our tools, bowls, crates, and other equipment, but had to purchase
varied and sundry other items such as a new wheelbarrow. We also built
a "hut within a hut," in the main coop, to house food and straw. This
was all in June.
In August and September, we have been in the process of getting ready
for a group of 24 new roosters who are moving here from Farm Sanctuary
on October 2, 2009. One thing the move has made possible is the ability
to create a new yard and build a new coop, because we have more room.
So, this is exactly what we did: built a new coop! The yard will be
fenced by the end of next week.
Currently, we are winterizing the coops, which means lowering ceilings,
insulating walls, installing south-facing windows (scrounged from the
fabulous Springfield Recycling Center), and filling all the ventilation
gaps with straw.
We have spent many thousands of dollars in these months which has
definitely made a dent in our savings. We want to thank all of the
people who have donated generously to offset the costs of the move,
including the preparation for the new birds, and ask those who have not
yet had a chance to consider helping us rebuild our cash reserves so as
to carry us through the winter. Remember, we have no paid staff: All
work is done on a completely volunteer basis.

Website Renovation
The Eastern Shore Sanctuary website was renovated this summer and has
lots of new content and links. If you've not stopped by recently, spend
some time browsing around:

Blog and Bling
We've upped the level of activity on our blog lately. Subscribing to
the blog is a great way to keep in touch with sanctuary activities in
between these irregular newsletters. Visit the blog at:

Bling! For every donation in excess of $100, the Eastern Shore
Sanctuary will send a free handmade blank book to the donor. These
gorgeous, one-of-a-kind books are perfect for writing everything from
random thoughts to addresses and phone numbers. They are made with love
by Aram Polster, co-manager of the sanctuary, from recycled materials.
Each book is unique; get yours today!
