From a dinosaur...
The point of the BD mailing list is not simply to publicise events - There's a calendar on the BD website for that - but to have discussions such as these. And anything else interesting. Or not - hence the subject line.
If they don't interest you, delete the e-mail. If none of them interest you, unsubscribe.
As for the swearer, yes, silly boy, I think we agree. However, if your organisation is likely to object to that, perhaps you should use your work e-mail for work related things rather than e-mail discussion groups...

[ESU British Debate: http://www.BritishDebate.com]
Please do move this off BD. You made all your important points (and they
*were* valid and worth saying) in your first minute, then repeated
yourselves. The knock for 5 minutes went a long time ago and the judges
are now no longer awarding positive points to anyone who's still
talking.
It's even worse now everyone's replying to the swear word post. All I'm
getting is spam from my email filter warning me someone tried to sent me
an email with offensive language in it. Four identical warnings so far.
My senior managers might be getting suspicious about the number of
abusive friends I seem to have...I think anyone in a school or business
who has subscribed to BD will be in the same situation. It's gone from
VERY similar ideas circling round, to absolutely identical posts. Please
stop!
