Hey Everyone,
Durham Debating Union have been kind enough to ask me to CA the Intervarsity
this year, which takes place on the 7th and 8th of November. I will be
assisted in this by Andrew Fitch who has agreed to act as DCA for the
tournament, and Stephen Goodman, who will be running the tab.
This year we have decide to focus on novice competition as well as the main
IV, and will be running a number of side events to this aim. First and
foremost will be a novice workshop on Friday evening in Durham, aimed at
introducing novice and improving speakers to BP debating. We will look at
all the usual aspects of BP debate, from role and position to definations
and cases. It should be a great help for speakers in only their first couple
of Intervarsities, and we hope everyone who can attend will. We will also be
undertaking a judge briefing/workshop at the same time, to give an overview
of judging techniques and methodology, but most importantly for the novice
competition, the construction of feedback for speakers, which will be open
to all adjudicators. Adjudicator training has often been left to hit and
miss self training, and I hope we can counter this to some extent. If you
have any interest in assisting in the presentation of these workshop, please
get in touch with me by email to steven.nolan84 (at) gmail.com..
For those who are travelling to judge with delegations, I would greatly
appreciate a brief debating/adjudication CV by email to steven.nolan84 (at)
gmail.com, to best allow me to place you in the preliminary rooms of the
competition. Both Andrew and myself are keen to ensure the highest possible
standard of judging at the intervarsity, along with the creation of panels
which hopefully allow judges to gain from the experience of being at the
competition too.
Finally, for those still on the list who are no longer attached to
delegations, or are not travelling with those delegations, I would be
indebted to you if you could make the trip fom wherever you are based to
Durham on the weekend in question. Durham Union have made a small fund
available to cover travel costs for judges, so if you wish to make an
application to this, please do so by email to steven.nolan84 (at) gmail.com.
In fact if you have any questions on adjudication or other issues relating
to the competition, please feel free to mail me, but for reg or
organisational stuff, Jon or Fletch are your best bet, at
durham-@gmail.com.
Thanks for taking the time to read this mail, hoping to see you all at
Durham.
Cheers,
Stephen
