Leaf free bike lanes
By Edward <mailto:edward-@registerguard.com> Russo
The Eugene Register-Guard
Starting this fall, Eugene's public works crews will collect leaves more
frequently from busy bikes lanes to improve the safety of bicyclists, city
officials said Wednesday.
Bicyclists have long been concerned about leaves piled in bike lanes
awaiting collection during the city's fall and winter leaf collection
program. Bicyclists consider the leaves hazardous because they can be
slippery and leaf piles can force bicyclists into traffic.
In response, public works officials will ask bicyclists and their advocacy
groups to help them identify the streets where piles of leaves in bike lanes
present the greatest danger for cyclists, said public works spokesman Eric
Jones.
